Six Man United players absent from training before Como Champions League fixture

According to a report by GOAL on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Manchester United have suffered a potential setback ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against Como after six first-team players reportedly missed Tuesday’s training session.

According to reports, Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu and young defender Ayden Heaven were absent as manager Michael Carrick prepared his team for Wednesday’s encounter.

The development raises concerns over United’s team selection, particularly with the club struggling for consistency and reportedly enduring a six-game winless run across all competitions.

Benjamin Sesko is also expected to remain unavailable because of a shin injury, further limiting Carrick’s attacking options.

United’s defensive department appears to be the biggest concern ahead of the European fixture. Martinez reportedly experienced discomfort in his thigh during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United and was withdrawn at half-time.

Carrick had explained that the Argentine defender “felt his thigh a little bit,” leaving uncertainty over his availability for the trip to Como.

Luke Shaw’s absence is another potential blow, with the left-back still recovering after limping off against Tottenham in a previous fixture.

The situation is further complicated by the suspension of Leny Yoro, who is unavailable after receiving a red card against Atletico Madrid.

With several defensive options potentially missing, Carrick could be forced to make changes to his backline. Matthijs de Ligt could provide a solution if he is fit enough to return to the starting team after a lengthy spell on the sidelines following back surgery.

The manager could also turn to younger defenders Dan Armer and Jaydan Kamason, who were reportedly involved in Tuesday’s training session. Harry Amass is another option as United consider ways to address their defensive shortage.

In midfield, Mainoo’s continued fitness concerns could limit Carrick’s ability to control possession and provide protection for the defence. The England international has reportedly missed the club’s last two fixtures after sustaining an injury during the draw with Tottenham.

Dorgu is also working his way back from a hamstring injury suffered while on international duty with Denmark.

Meanwhile, Rashford’s absence from training raises questions about his readiness to feature against Como. The forward was reportedly an unused substitute against Leeds United, and his availability could be important as United look to improve their attacking performance.

United began their Champions League campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Sabah before suffering a 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid.

Carrick will hope to have as many players available as possible as his side look to return to winning ways in Europe.
