Nurse Jacobeth Jeptoo risked her life to help victims of the helicopter crash that killed former Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno and five other people.
Months later, her courage has earned her national recognition from President William Ruto.
Jeptoo was honoured during the 2026 national honours ceremony at State Lodge in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Tuesday, October 20, in recognition of her bravery and selflessness at the crash scene.
Jeptoo attracted national attention on February 28 when she rushed to the scene of the fatal helicopter crash in Chepkiep, Mosop Constituency, Nandi County, hoping to assist those on board as the aircraft burst into flames.
Armed with gloves, she moved towards the wreckage despite the dangerous conditions in an attempt to help the victims.
Her actions drew widespread praise for placing the lives of others ahead of her own safety in a moment of extreme danger.
According to her official citation, Jeptoo demonstrated “extraordinary courage and selflessness in safeguarding the right to life”.
The citation further described her actions as “brave first response and life-saving assistance under perilous circumstances”, adding that they reflected “exceptional humanity, compassion, and unwavering respect for human dignity”.
At the time of the crash, Jeptoo had recently completed her community health nursing training at Kendu Bay Adventist School of Medical Sciences and was awaiting her qualifying examinations.
Her recognition highlights the role ordinary citizens can play during emergencies, particularly when they choose to help others despite the risks.
Jeptoo’s response at the crash site became a powerful example of courage and compassion, drawing national attention even before she began her professional career.
Ruto presides over national honours ceremony
The helicopter crash claimed the lives of Ng’eno and five other people after the aircraft went down in Nandi County in February.
Ruto presided over Tuesday’s national honours ceremony, which recognised Kenyans from different fields for their service and contributions to the country.
The President said the awards reflected the nation’s appreciation of people whose actions demonstrated patriotism, sacrifice and a commitment to helping others.
Jeptoo was among those selected for the 2026 national honours roll recommended by the National Heroes Council, which identifies individuals whose work and actions have made a difference in their communities and across Kenya.
