Panasonic GH5 Settings: A Complete User Guide From Setup to Video

Panasonic GH5 Settings: A Complete User Guide From Setup to Video

The Panasonic Lumix GH5 records 4K at 60p, plus 10-bit 4:2:2 4K at 30p. It does so in a weather-sealed body with no recording time limit. Its menus spread those options across Rec, Motion Picture, Custom and a separate Creative Video menu. The last one appears only with the mode dial at Creative Video. This guide walks you through the GH5 settings worth changing first, in the order you will need them. Four changes matter most: the right recording format, back button focus, Continuous AF for video and a card plan.

This guide comes from personal experience, backed by heavy research, to pass on to you. I owned a GH5 myself and used it for video work for years. It’s a workhorse, its clarity is unbeatable, and the stabilization is amazing. As many of you know, I shot Nikon for 17 years before I moved over to Canon. Where two settings both make sense, you get both options and the reason behind each one.

New owners should start with first-day setup. Video shooters should jump straight to the video GH5 settings through the table of contents.

These specifications come mostly from Panasonic’s published spec sheet. They explain why some GH5 settings matter more on this camera than on stills-first bodies.

Two numbers shape most of your setup choices. First, 4K 60p records in 8-bit inside the camera, while 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 tops out at 30p. Second, the AF system relies on contrast detection with DFD, not phase detection. For this reason, the recording format and the video AF settings matter more here than on most bodies.

Panasonic replaced the GH5 with the GH5 II, and B&H no longer sells the original new. As a result, buying used is the practical route today.

MPB is where I buy my used camera gear, and PhotographyTalk has worked with MPB for nearly eight years. Each used GH5 there lists its cosmetic condition and what comes in the box. The listings we checked in October 2026 also came with a six-month warranty. MPB had 23 used GH5 bodies listed at the time, with working units from $574 to $669.

Firmware updates added major features to this camera, so check your version before you change other GH5 settings. Open the Setup menu and select Version Disp. As of October 2026, the current release is version 2.8, from spring 2022. Version 2.0 added 400 Mbps ALL-I recording and HLG. Later, version 2.6 added Continuous AF MODE2 and Highlight Weighted metering.

To update, copy the single .bin file from Panasonic’s support site. Place it in the root of a card formatted in the camera. Then insert the card, switch to Playback, and confirm the update prompt. The process takes about two to three minutes with a fully charged battery. Format the card again afterward.

The GH5 has two SD slots, and both take UHS-II cards. Our guide to memory card types and speeds explains the ratings. For 4K at 150 Mbps, Panasonic requires a U3 card. In contrast, 400 Mbps ALL-I calls for a V60 memory card or faster.

Open Double Slot Function in the Setup menu. Relay Rec moves to the second card when the first fills. Backup Rec writes every file to both cards, a sensible choice for paid jobs. However, Backup Rec with 400 Mbps ALL-I needs a V60 card in both slots. Panasonic also advises matching speed class and capacity across both cards. Allocation Rec sends stills and video to different cards. Format both cards in the camera before your first shoot. The REMOTE socket sits above the door and takes a 2.5 mm DMW-RSL1 cable release.

Panasonic rates the DMW-BLF19 at about 400 shots through the viewfinder and 410 on the screen under CIPA testing. Turn on Power Save LVF Shooting in Setup > Economy, and the rating rises to about 1,000 shots. For video, Panasonic rates about 50 minutes of actual 4K 60p recording per charge. Carry at least two spares for a full shoot day.

Next, set the clock and time zone in the Setup menu. Correct timestamps help when you sync clips from several cameras.

Carry genuine Panasonic DMW-BLF19 spares for long video days. Also, a Sony TOUGH-G V90 card handles 400 Mbps ALL-I. A Lexar Silver PRO V60 card meets the same 400 Mbps rule and suits Relay Rec in Slot 2. For Backup Rec, buy two of the same card.

These GH5 settings decide how much data each still holds. Open Quality in the Rec menu and choose RAW or RAW+Fine. The full frame measures 5184 x 3888 pixels at 4:3. Leave Picture Size on L, and pick Aspect Ratio to match your output.

Photo Style shapes JPEGs and the preview. Standard or Natural suits most stills. Meanwhile, Cinelike D gives a flatter, film-like look for grading, and Cinelike V adds contrast. Turn i.Dynamic off when you shoot RAW, since it lowers exposure to protect JPEG highlights. Set Long Shtr NR to ON for night work, and expect a dark-frame wait after each long exposure.

The focus mode lever around the AF/AE LOCK button sets AFS/AFF, AFC or MF. AFS locks focus once for still subjects. In contrast, AFC keeps refocusing while you half-press the shutter or hold the AF-ON button. The AF Mode button, also Fn3, picks the AF area.

AF Mode offers Face/Eye Detection, Tracking, 225-Area, Custom Multi, 1-Area and Pinpoint. 1-Area suits most stills, because you place one box on your subject. Face/Eye Detection finds up to 15 faces and focuses on the nearer eye. Custom Multi suits birds and sports, where you shape a group of areas to fit the action. Pinpoint works only in AFS.

Back button focus is one of the most useful GH5 settings to change. It separates focusing from the shutter release. Our back-button focusing explained guide covers the technique in depth. Open Custom > Focus / Release Shutter and set AF/AE Lock to AF-ON. Then set Shutter AF to OFF. Your thumb on AF/AE LOCK now runs focus, and the shutter only takes the picture.

Firmware 2.6 also added AF-ON Near Shift and AF-ON Far Shift. Assign one to an Fn button, and the camera favors subjects closer to or farther from you. This helps when a fence or branch pulls focus away.

AF Custom Setting (Photo) in the Rec menu holds four presets for AFF and AFC. Set 1 suits general shooting, while Set 2 suits subjects moving in one direction. Then, Set 3 handles slow, random movement, and Set 4 handles fast, random movement. Each one tunes AF Sensitivity, AF Area Switching Sensitivity and Moving Object Prediction.

The GH5 autofocus system relies on contrast detection, so it hunts more than phase-detect systems in dim light. To reduce hunting, stop down a little and give AF a high-contrast edge. Also, turn Quick AF off to save battery.

Auto ISO handles exposure for most handheld stills. Open ISO Sensitivity (photo) in the Rec menu and set the ISO Auto Upper Limit Setting, for example 3200. Next, set Min. Shtr Speed, which applies when ISO is on Auto. AUTO lets the camera choose, or you set a fixed speed such as 1/125 second.

Micro Four Thirds files show noise sooner than full-frame files at the same ISO. For this reason, keep the upper limit at 3200 for clean prints, or 6400 for events. Since firmware 2.6, AF/AE LOCK set to AE LOCK holds exposure in M mode with Auto ISO. Back button focus takes over this button, so move AF-ON to an Fn button to keep both.

Multiple metering, a 1,728-zone mode, works for most scenes. Metering Mode in the Rec menu also offers Center Weighted, Spot and, since firmware 2.6, Highlight Weighted. Highlight Weighted protects bright areas such as stage lights or skies. For video, turn on Zebra Pattern in Custom > Monitor / Display to flag clipped highlights.

Shutter Type is one of the quieter GH5 settings with a big effect on sharpness. The Rec menu offers AUTO, mechanical, electronic front curtain and electronic. Electronic front curtain cuts shutter shock on a tripod. The electronic shutter runs silent and reaches 1/16000 second, but fast motion bends in the frame. Use Shutter Delay of 1 or 2 seconds for the sharpest landscape files.

The GH5 offers 20 Fn slots: six physical buttons, five touch tabs, five joystick directions and four cursor buttons. Open Fn Button Set in Custom > Operation to assign them. Press DISP. there to reach Fn12 to Fn20. Good choices include AF-ON Near Shift, Min. Shtr Speed and Destination Slot. Set Q.MENU to CUSTOM, which holds up to 15 items.

Next, set Joystick Setting to D.FOCUS Movement, so the joystick moves the AF area directly. Then build My Menu with the items you change most: Rec Quality, Photo Style and Double Slot Function.

Cust.Set Mem. in the Setup menu saves up to five complete setups. C1 and C2 on the mode dial each hold one, while C3 holds the remaining three. For example, save a 4K 24p video setup to C1 and a stills setup to C2. Back up everything with Save/Restore Camera Setting, which writes to the card in Slot 1. Firmware 2.8 fixed a bug in restoring custom modes, so update first.

Start with this table of GH5 settings by subject, then adjust for your lenses and light.

Wildlife work depends on back button focus and a matched AF Custom Setting. Video work, though, gains the most from a fixed 180-degree shutter and manual focus on planned shots.

The landscape row assumes a steady tripod, so the Peak Design Travel Tripod leads this set. In addition, the DJI RS 3 Mini gimbal and the RODE VideoMic NTG cover the video row.

These GH5 settings sit outside daily shooting. Each one solves a specific problem for handheld, action or cinema work.

The GH5 moves its sensor on five axes, and Panasonic rates it at 5 stops under CIPA testing. With a Dual I.S. 2 lens, the body and lens stabilizers work together. Our image stabilization explained guide covers how sensor-shift systems work. Open Stabilizer in the Rec menu and set Operation Mode to Normal. For video, E-Stabilization (Video) adds electronic correction with a slight crop. I.S. Lock (Video) holds a locked-off look for static handheld shots.

6K Photo records at 30 fps and lets you save any frame as an 18MP still. Alternatively, 4K Photo runs at 60 fps for 8MP frames. Both suit unpredictable action, such as a bird taking off. Post Focus records a burst across the focus range, so you pick the sharp point after the shot. Our five standout GH5 features article covers these modes in more depth.

Firmware 2.0 added high-resolution anamorphic recording, with 6K at 4992 x 3744 in 10-bit HEVC. These 4:3 modes appear in the Creative Video menu. Turn on the desqueeze display option to see the corrected image while you shoot. Set the stabilizer to the matching 2.0x or 1.33x mode for your lens.

Choose System Frequency in the Setup menu before other video GH5 settings, since it sets your frame rates. 59.94Hz records 24p as 23.98p, while 24.00Hz (CINEMA) gives true 24p. Choose 50.00Hz for PAL work, then restart the camera and format the card.

The GH5 records 4K 60p in 8-bit 4:2:0 at 150 Mbps. For 10-bit 4:2:2, choose 4K at 30p or 24p with 150 Mbps Long GOP or 400 Mbps ALL-I. Set Rec Format to MOV in the Motion Picture menu, then pick Rec Quality. For most work, the best GH5 settings start with 4K 10-bit 24p. Pick 400 Mbps ALL-I when you plan heavy grading and have V60 cards. C4K reaches only 24p. Luminance Level in the Motion Picture menu sets the recorded range. Use 64-940 for 10-bit footage unless your editor expects full range.

Turn the mode dial to Creative Video for full manual control. There, SS/Gain Operation sets shutter in degrees, so 180 degrees keeps motion blur natural at any frame rate. In bright light, a fixed 180-degree shutter overexposes at wide apertures, so add a variable ND filter. Variable Frame Rate reaches 180 fps in Full HD and 60 fps in 4K, but AF is unavailable.

V-Log L gives about 12 stops of dynamic range, but the original GH5 needs the paid DMW-SFU1 upgrade key. Activate it in Setup > Activate. Log footage needs color grading, so turn on V-LogL View Assist to see a normal-contrast preview. Expose carefully, since underexposed log shows noise in the shadows. Without the key, Cinelike D or Like709 gives a flatter, gradable look.

Continuous AF in the Motion Picture menu offers MODE1, MODE2 and OFF, with MODE2 added in firmware 2.6. MODE1 focuses only while recording, and MODE2 also focuses during standby in Creative Video mode. Then, open AF Custom Setting (Video) and lower AF Speed for smooth pulls. Lower AF Sensitivity also stops the lens from jumping to objects passing in front. Pick MODE2 for moving subjects, so focus tracks before and during recording. For interviews, set Continuous AF to OFF and press AF-ON to focus once. Manual focus with peaking avoids pulsing altogether on planned shots.

Plug a microphone into the 3.5 mm mic jack, and monitor sound through the headphone jack. Set Mic Level Adj. for steady levels, and keep Mic Level Limiter on. XLR microphones need the optional DMW-XLR1 adapter, which mounts on the hot shoe. In addition, WFM/Vector Scope in the Creative Video menu shows a waveform for exact exposure.

The full-size HDMI port sends 10-bit 4:2:2 to an external recorder, even at 4K 60p. Set 4K/60p Bit Mode to 4:2:2 10bit in HDMI Rec Output, inside Creative Video mode. However, the camera does not record to the card in this mode. Use the included cable holder to protect the port. Panasonic sets no recording time limit, and files split at set sizes while recording continues.

I used my GH5 for video work for years, and it was a workhorse with amazing stabilization. Start with four changes: the recording format, back button focus, Continuous AF and a card plan. Then work through the rest of these GH5 settings as your shooting calls for them.

The GH5 has four limits worth knowing. Contrast AF hunts in video, and 4K 60p stays 8-bit inside the camera. Also, the log profile costs extra, and the Micro Four Thirds sensor shows noise sooner in low light. If you need reliable video AF, a full-frame hybrid with phase-detect AF fits better. The GH5 II improves detection but keeps DFD contrast AF. It adds internal 10-bit 4K 60p and includes log. Low-light shooters should look at the GH5S, and the GH6 moves up to 5.7K.

However, the 10-bit files, unlimited recording and 5-stop stabilization still suit interviews, events and documentary work. Before buying a used body, read our guide on what to check when buying a used camera.

Keep this guide and Panasonic’s GH5 Owner’s Manual for advanced features open while you set up. Save your favorite GH5 settings to C1, C2 and C3. Finally, put the menus away and go shoot.

Use Creative Video mode in M, with SS/Gain Operation set to degrees and a 180-degree shutter. Record MOV at 4K 10-bit 24p, or 400 Mbps ALL-I on V60 cards. Use Cinelike D for a gradable look, or V-Log L with the upgrade key.

Yes, but the original GH5 needs the paid DMW-SFU1 upgrade key for its log profile. You activate it through Setup > Activate. The GH5 II includes it.

Open Custom > Focus / Release Shutter. Set AF/AE Lock to AF-ON, then set Shutter AF to OFF. The AF/AE LOCK button then controls focus, and the shutter only takes the picture.

Panasonic rates the DMW-BLF19 at about 400 shots through the viewfinder and 410 on the screen under CIPA standards. Power Save LVF Shooting raises the figure to about 1,000. Actual 4K 60p recording runs about 50 minutes per charge.

Panasonic calls for a V60 card or faster for 400 Mbps ALL-I recording. A U3 card covers 4K at 150 Mbps. For Backup Rec with ALL-I, put a V60 card in both slots.
