NSA Considers Renovation or Replacement of Accra Sports Stadium Over Engineering Defect

The National Sports Authority (NSA) is assessing whether to undertake major renovations at the Accra Sports Stadium or construct a new facility to address engineering defects affecting the ageing sports complex.

Acting Director-General of the NSA, Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, said the authority was examining the stadium’s infrastructure challenges and identifying areas requiring urgent intervention.

He explained that the problems could not be resolved simultaneously, making a phased approach necessary while the NSA determines the most appropriate long-term solution.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Prof. Osei Sarpong maintained that the stadium remained an important national asset, despite concerns about its condition.

He said the authority would evaluate the cost and feasibility of renovating the existing structure against the option of replacing it with a new stadium.

The discussion follows comments by former NSA Board Chairman Prof. Fred Awaah, who described the facility as a ā€œdeath trapā€ on August 29 and suggested that demolition would be necessary if the authority had the power to order it.

However, Prof. Osei Sarpong indicated that the immediate priority was to identify the stadium’s shortcomings and address them progressively rather than shut down or demolish the facility before a long-term decision had been reached.

He stressed that the NSA needed to tackle the deficiencies one after another to improve conditions while maintaining the stadium’s role in Ghanaian football.

Among the infrastructure concerns he highlighted were inadequate water storage facilities and deteriorating pipes.

According to the acting director-general, the stadium’s age and its location near the coast have contributed to the deterioration of some of its installations.

He questioned the absence of an underground water reservoir at the facility, noting that the infrastructure was constructed many years ago. He also pointed to the continued wear and tear of pipes as a maintenance challenge associated with the stadium’s coastal location.

The authority is expected to continue assessing the extent of the defects and determine which repairs should receive priority. However, Prof. Osei Sarpong did not provide a timeline for a final decision on whether the stadium would be extensively renovated or replaced.

Despite the concerns, the facility remains strategically important to Ghanaian football. Prof. Osei Sarpong noted that the Accra Sports Stadium is currently the only venue in Ghana accredited by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), underscoring its significance for the organisation of football matches.

The NSA consequently faces the challenge of improving the stadium’s condition while ensuring that Ghana retains a suitable venue for major football activities.

For now, the authority’s approach centres on addressing the identified engineering problems in phases while evaluating the available options for the facility’s future.
