Nairobi: Breakthrough as a Notorious Gangster Is Finally Arrested at Her Embakasi Hideout
Detectives in Nairobi have arrested a 38 year old woman accused of defrauding a Chinese investor of more than Sh13 million through a fraudulent aluminium export deal.
The suspect, Harriet Mary Wabwire, was apprehended at a residence in Tassia Estate after officers from Kamukunji Police Station spent several weeks tracking her down.According to investigators, Wabwire allegedly went into hiding after receiving the money, prompting detectives to launch a search that eventually led to her arrest.
Police allege that she posed as a senior official of OTD Group Limited and persuaded the Chinese investor that she could deliver approximately 24 tonnes of aluminium alloys for export to China.
The consignment was reportedly intended for Ningbo, with the investor being assured that the goods were already available at the Port of Mombasa and awaiting shipment.
Investigators believe the suspect used forged paperwork to make the business arrangement appear genuine and convince the investor that the export process was underway.
The documents allegedly included a counterfeit bill of lading and a falsified certificate of conformity purportedly associated with the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
The paperwork reportedly indicated that the aluminium had already been loaded and was ready to be transported to China.
Trusting the information provided, the investor transferred more than 101,000 US dollars, equivalent to over Sh13 million, to accounts associated with the suspect.
However, the investor reportedly became suspicious after the woman allegedly stopped responding to his communications shortly after receiving the payment.
The incident was subsequently reported to the authorities, leading to an investigation into the suspected fraud.
Detectives launched an intelligence operation and used forensic tracking methods to establish the suspect’s whereabouts. Their efforts eventually paid off when they traced her to a house in Tassia Estate, where she was arrested without resistance.
Wabwire remains in police custody as officers complete preparations to present her before a court of law.
Meanwhile, investigators are examining whether she had accomplices and whether she may have been involved in other fraudulent transactions targeting unsuspecting investors.
The arrest highlights the dangers of fraudulent business arrangements in which criminals allegedly rely on forged documents and false promises to obtain money from unsuspecting clients.
Police have urged investors to conduct thorough background checks on potential business partners and verify all trade documents with the relevant authorities before transferring large sums of money.
Authorities say such precautions are essential in preventing financial losses and protecting businesses from sophisticated fraud schemes.
