Kano NDC Candidates Accuse Kwankwasiyya Of Intimidation, Plot To Alter 2027 Election List

Kano NDC Candidates Accuse Kwankwasiyya Of Intimidation, Plot To Alter 2027 Election List

According to a report by DAILY POST on Tuesday 20 October 2026, five candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State have accused the Kwankwasiyya Movement of allegedly intimidating them and attempting to frustrate their chances of contesting the 2027 general elections.

The candidates also claimed that the movement was seeking to influence the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to discard the list of nominees submitted by the party’s national leadership in favour of another set of candidates.

The affected candidates are Abdulmajid Umar, representing Gwale Federal Constituency; Shaaban Sharada of Kano Municipal Federal Constituency; Ishmael Sani of Kumbotso Federal Constituency; Ibrahim Bango of Sumaila/Takai Federal Constituency; and Nasir Ahmed of Nassarawa Federal Constituency.

The candidates made the allegations in a seven-page complaint dated October 17 and prepared by their solicitors, Bola Aidi, SAN & Co.

In the complaint, they challenged a petition allegedly submitted by Kwankwasiyya to INEC and called on the movement to abide by a Federal High Court judgment concerning the party’s candidates.

The complainants referred to a judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Kano on October 14, 2026, which they said confirmed two of them as the authentic NDC candidates in the state; They added that the court reserved judgment in the cases involving the other three candidates.

They insisted that they had satisfied the requirements stipulated in the NDC constitution and fulfilled all necessary legal conditions before the party’s national leadership submitted their names to INEC.

Despite this, the candidates alleged that an influential political figure within the party in Kano was working against their nominations and attempting to prevent them from participating in the forthcoming elections.

They maintained that the party’s national leadership had the authority to determine its nominees and that no individual should be allowed to interfere with that decision or seek to overturn a court ruling through other means.

The complaint stated that the unnamed political leader had openly expressed opposition to their candidacies and was determined to stop them from contesting the 2027 elections on the NDC platform.

The candidates further alleged that a recent protest at INEC was organised specifically to challenge their nominations.

They also questioned the motive behind the demonstration by Kwankwasiyya supporters and a separate petition against Hauwa Buhari, who was accused of tampering with NDC documents at the electoral commission.

According to the candidates, the protest and petition did not represent the official position of the NDC national leadership.

They also alleged that the demonstration occurred only days after the court ruling that upheld their nominations against candidates said to have the backing of Kwankwasiyya.

Describing the development as an attempt to undermine the rule of law, the candidates accused the unnamed political figure of allowing personal grievances to take precedence over the party’s constitution and judicial authority.

They called for respect for the court’s decision and the party’s nomination process as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The report did not contain a response from the Kwankwasiyya Movement to the allegations.
