Itumeleng Khune Reveals the Truth About His Chiefs Salary
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has criticised the condition of the pitch at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium following his team’s 1-0 defeat to Red Arrows in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup in Ndola, Zambia.
The defeat extended Amakhosi’s winless run to six matches across all competitions, increasing the pressure on Da Cruz and his players ahead of the decisive return leg in South Africa. Chiefs must overturn the deficit at home to keep their hopes of reaching the competition’s group stage for a second consecutive season alive.
Da Cruz admitted that the playing surface was not suitable for his team’s preferred style of football. However, he insisted that his players adapted to the conditions and that the pitch could not be blamed for the disappointing result.
The Chiefs coach explained that his team had prepared for Red Arrows’ approach and expected the hosts to rely on long balls, crosses and energetic running to create scoring opportunities.
According to Da Cruz, Chiefs were not caught off guard by their opponents’ tactics and controlled much of the encounter. He believes the decisive moment came when Amakhosi conceded from a corner kick.
Despite his disappointment, Da Cruz will now focus on preparing his team for the return fixture, where Chiefs must produce a stronger performance to advance in the competition.
Meanwhile, former Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has dismissed claims that he earned R480,000 per month during his playing career at the Soweto giants. Khune maintained that his monthly club salary never exceeded R200,000 and that no player earned R480,000 during his time at the club.
He also explained that endorsement agreements, including his deal with Danone, and investments contributed significantly to his overall income.
As Chiefs prepare for the return leg, Da Cruz faces the challenge of ending the team’s winless streak, restoring confidence and securing qualification. The upcoming match could prove crucial for both his future plans and Amakhosi’s continental ambitions.
