Catholic priest dies while giving sermon after cross falls on him

A peaceful Catholic Mass turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died when a large wooden crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass at a church in Ecuador.

The shocking incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, also known as Perpetuo Socorro Church, in Guayaquil. The service was being livestreamed on social media, meaning viewers witnessed the horrifying moment as it unfolded.

According to reports, the 53-year-old priest was standing near the altar, leading the congregation in prayer, when the massive crucifix mounted on the wall behind him suddenly detached and fell forward.
