We Deliberately Appointed Afi Agbenyo to EC Despite Her NDC Affiliation – Sammy Ayeh

Dr. Sammy Ayeh has explained that the appointment of Afi Agbenyo to Ghana’s Electoral Commission was a deliberate decision, despite her alleged affiliation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, the decision was informed by the need to ensure checks and balances within the electoral management body.

Ayeh stated that Agbenyo’s appointment was made with an understanding of her political affiliation, adding that her presence on the commission was intended to contribute to oversight and accountability in its operations.

He argued that having individuals with different political backgrounds involved in electoral administration could help strengthen internal scrutiny and ensure that important decisions are not taken without appropriate checks.

His comments highlight the importance of public confidence in the Electoral Commission, an institution responsible for organising and supervising elections in Ghana.

The commission plays a central role in the country’s democratic process, including voter registration, the conduct of elections, the declaration of results and the implementation of electoral regulations.

Because of these responsibilities, appointments to the commission often attract public attention, particularly when questions arise about the political affiliations of individuals selected to serve.

Ayeh’s remarks suggest that he considers Agbenyo’s presence on the commission part of an approach aimed at promoting internal accountability rather than a decision that should automatically raise concerns about political influence.

However, the effectiveness of such an arrangement depends on the commission’s ability to operate independently, apply electoral rules fairly and maintain public trust across the country’s political divide.

The issue of political neutrality remains particularly important in Ghana, where electoral institutions are expected to demonstrate impartiality before, during and after elections.

While political parties and their supporters may hold different views about appointments to the commission, the institution’s credibility ultimately depends on its conduct, transparency and adherence to the law.
