Trump explains why he is delaying action against Russia, accuses Zelenskyy of prolonging war
US President Donald Trump has defended his decision to delay signing a document targeting Russia, saying he does not want to jeopardise ongoing peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday afternoon, Trump said progress was being made in efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, including negotiations over hostages.
“My decision on Russia is a very simple one. I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and don’t want to do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table,” he wrote.
Trump also argued that Russia was doing little to assist Iran and said he wanted to keep it that way.
He criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over attacks on Russian diesel refineries, claiming the strikes were hurting global diesel markets, including in the United States, and causing difficulties for farmers, ranchers and businesses.
The US president further accused Zelenskyy of not wanting to end the war, arguing that Ukraine’s position had deteriorated and that its leader could have secured a better deal two years ago.
“He could have made a better deal two years ago than he can now,” Trump wrote.
He claimed that Ukraine had lost a significant portion of its territory and suffered heavy losses among its male population.
Trump insisted that he wanted the war to end but maintained that he could sign the document targeting Russia later.
