Three Killed, Shops Burnt as Farmers-Herders Clash Rocks Abuja Community

By Tgnews Reporter At least three people have reportedly been killed and several others injured following a renewed clash between farmers and herders in Paikon-Kore community, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The violence, which started on Saturday afternoon and continued into Sunday morning, also left several shops at the community market burnt, alongside two houses and a motorcycle. Goods worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed. According to residents, the crisis began when cattle belonging to some herders allegedly strayed into a groundnut farm containing crops yet to be harvested. A resident, Danlami Ibrahim, said the farm owner confronted the herders over the incident, triggering an argument that reportedly escalated when one of the herders attacked a farmer with a cutlass, severing one of his hands. The incident angered residents and allegedly triggered a reprisal attack in which three herders were reportedly killed. The Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Usman, confirmed receiving reports that three herders had lost their lives. He said further information was still being gathered regarding the number of injured persons. Several victims were taken to medical facilities in Gwagwalada, including Sabon Nakowa Hospital and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where some were seen receiving treatment. The Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Kasim Mohammed Ikwa, visited the affected community on Sunday alongside the Divisional Police Officer, SP Aaron H. Kaura, and other security personnel. Ikwa condemned the violence and announced plans to convene a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday to address the crisis and develop measures to prevent further attacks. He urged farmers and herders to exercise restraint, warning residents against retaliation and other actions capable of worsening the situation. The council chairman advised farmers whose crops had been damaged by cattle to report their complaints to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to self-help. He also disclosed that community leaders, youth representatives, traditional authorities and other stakeholders had been invited to participate in efforts to find a lasting solution. Meanwhile, soldiers, police officers, vigilantes and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have been deployed to the community to restore calm. The FCT Police Command had yet to provide an official response as of the time the report was filed. The latest incident follows another clash reported on August 11, 2026, involving Paikon-Kore, Ibwa and Rafin-Zurfi communities, during which a farmer reportedly lost a hand and three other people sustained machete injuries. Residents have repeatedly linked the recurring confrontations to disputes over cattle straying into farms and destroying crops. Ishaku Danjuma, a farmer, alleged that most of the clashes across the affected communities stemmed from cattle entering cultivated farmland. However, herders have also raised concerns about the encroachment of farming activities into designated grazing areas and the obstruction of cattle routes. The Paikon-Kore Grazing Reserve, which covers approximately 9,500 hectares, has reportedly experienced encroachment by surrounding communities, according to herders. The competing demands for farmland and grazing space have continued to create tensions between the two groups. Security analyst and Chairman of Beacon Consulting, Dr Kabiru Adamu, has called for stronger early warning systems, impartial law enforcement and a more effective justice system to prevent disputes from escalating into deadly violence. Adamu said authorities must respond promptly to warning signs and ensure that allegations of crop destruction and attacks are investigated fairly. He stressed that anyone who takes the law into their own hands should face the law, regardless of whether the individual is a farmer or a herder. The security expert also urged traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders to intervene early when tensions emerge. He warned that misinformation circulating on social media could inflame communal tensions and undermine efforts to restore peace. The renewed violence adds to a history of deadly farmers-herders confrontations across parts of the FCT, including Gwagwalada, Kwali and Kuje, where previous incidents have resulted in deaths, injuries, property destruction and displacement.   📰 Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
