The award-winning rapper said many Ghanaian musicians are forced to build their careers independently, with limited financial backing from wealthy individuals and corporate figures.
Sarkodie made the remarks during a recent episode of the *When We Sit* podcast, where he compared the music industries in Nigeria and Ghana.
According to him, Nigerian businessmen are more willing to take financial risks by investing in homegrown talents, helping artists fund major projects and expand their reach beyond the continent.
“What Ghanaian artists do is organic. I give a business plan, even with that it is hard to get some people to come in,” he said.
“But in Nigeria, I think they take a lot of risk. Most of the rich people with money take a lot of risk to put their people on.”
The rapper, known for his contributions to Ghanaian hip-hop and Afrobeats, noted that executing major music projects requires substantial financial resources, using performances at London’s O2 Arena as an example.
“If I break down what it takes to do the O2 Arena, you will freak out, but then we still have to do it,” he added.
Sarkodie also recalled meeting Nigerian billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu, saying he was surprised when Elumelu disclosed how much he was investing in a Nigerian artist he believed represented the future of Afrobeats.
Although he did not identify the artist in the remarks quoted, the encounter reinforced his view that wealthy Nigerians are playing a significant role in financing and promoting the country’s music industry.
The rapper urged Ghanaian business executives and affluent individuals to adopt a similar approach by providing financial support to local musicians.
He believes increased investment from Ghanaian entrepreneurs could help artists take bigger creative and commercial risks, stage major international shows and compete more effectively in the global music market.
Sarkodie’s comments have renewed attention on the role of private investment in the growth of African music, particularly how financial backing can help artists turn their talent into sustainable businesses.
