PM warns FBR officers against strikes, demands performance: sources

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warned Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officers against strikes and blackmailing tactics, saying only officials who deliver results will remain in the organization, sources told 24 News.

During a meeting on FBR affairs, the prime minister took notice of a recent strike call by FBR officers and directed them to focus on their responsibilities.

“Blackmailing by any officer is unacceptable. Focus on your work instead of going on strike,” the prime minister said, according to sources.

Shehbaz Sharif said he expected results from the FBR and made it clear that officers failing to perform their duties would have no place in the organization.

He directed the FBR chairman and federal ministers to ensure that only performing officers continued to serve in the tax authority.

The prime minister questioned the performance of FBR officers despite the provision of new vehicles, facilities and substantial perks.

“We provided FBR officers with new vehicles and all necessary facilities. You also enjoy substantial perks, so why are there no results?” he asked, according to sources.

Shehbaz Sharif said tax collection targets must be achieved at all costs and directed officials to improve the organization’s performance.

He said the FBR would neither be shut down nor abolished and that the government would ensure its continued functioning.

The prime minister also directed that the ongoing FBR reform program continue and sought a comprehensive report on the organization’s affairs, sources said.
