Which French cities have nighttime curfews?

French authorities have ordered partial curfews for Paris and other cities, including Lyon, Lille, Nice, from late Monday into early Tuesday.

The measures were brought in as officials seek to restore order following a weekend of protests that degenerated into clashes with police, the vandalism or arson of several public buildings and widespread looting of shops.

The curfew ordered for parts of Paris runs from 11:00 pm (2100 GMT) Monday to 6:00 am Tuesday.

It applies to two areas that were the focus of looting on the weekend: the Republic square in the centre-east of the capital, and the very central Chatelet-les-Halles zone where many shops are located.

Additionally, a ban on public gatherings taking place in those two zones came into effect from 8:00 pm on Monday.

France’s third-biggest city of Lyon has a curfew for its very central zone, where a tourist office was torched in the protests on Saturday.

The ban on public movement in the zone applies from 9:00 pm Monday to 6:00 am Tuesday.

A public-gathering ban was also in force in parts of Lyon from 6:00 pm Monday.

Nice, the biggest city on the French Riviera, has a curfew for its centre running from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am, under order of the mayor. But its curfew applies only to unaccompanied minors.

Lille, France’s fourth-biggest metropolitan area, and the towns of Douai, Wattignies and Denain, all located in the north of France, have curfews for unaccompanied minors from 8:00 pm Monday to 6:00 am Tuesday. The measures apply only to certain zones.

Coulaines, a village on the northern outskirts of the city of Le Mans, has banned unaccompanied minors aged under 16 in certain parts of it, for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am the next day.

Authorities on France’s Caribbean archipelago of Guadeloupe also ordered a curfew for minors in the main cities of Pointe-a-Pitre and Les Abymes after recent protests there descended into violence.
