Petroleum Trade Through Ghana Supplies 40% Of Burkina Faso’s Consumption
byEbenezer MaduguOctober 19, 20260 Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and Burkina Faso’s National Hydrocarbons Company (Sonabhy) are working to strengthen cooperation in the petroleum industry, as petroleum supplies through Ghana now account for 40 per cent of Burkina Faso’s national consumption.
The increase from about 15 per cent was recorded since President John Dramani Mahama returned to office in 2024, according to TOR Managing Director Edmond Kombat.
He said the growth showed the importance of cooperation between the two institutions and Ghana’s role as a major petroleum supply route for the West African sub-region.

The Sonabhy delegation, led by its Managing Director, Dr Patrice Forogo, visited Mr Kombat to discuss ways to deepen cooperation and expand petroleum trade between the two countries.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, to thank President Mahama and the government for their support for the movement, trading and supply of petroleum products to Burkina Faso.
Dr Forogo welcomed the growing partnership and expressed his commitment to strengthening petroleum trade through Ghana. He said further cooperation could create opportunities for both institutions to generate additional revenue through mutually agreed transactions and services.
He also congratulated Mr Kombat on his appointment as TOR Managing Director and wished him success in his role.
The discussions focused on improving petroleum supply arrangements, expanding trade and supporting regional energy security.
As part of the visit, the delegation toured key sections of the refinery, including the utilities, tank farm, new safety block, quality control unit and F-61 furnace at the Crude Distillation Unit.
The tour gave the delegation an opportunity to learn more about TOR’s operations, facilities and ongoing development activities.
