Mahama secures EU funding for Tamale, Damongo and Yendi water projects
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that funding has been secured for water projects in Tamale, Damongo and Yendi, with work expected to begin soon to improve access to potable water in the three communities.
He disclosed this on Monday, October 19, when the Regent of the Dagbon Kingdom paid a courtesy call on him.
President Mahama said the Minister of Finance had secured approval for the funding during engagements with the European Union.
βWe have secured the funding for the Tamale, Damango and also the Yendi water systems. Indeed, the Minister of Finance was in the European Union, and it has been approved, and so very soon work will commence on this water system,β he said.
The President also announced an interim measure to increase water supply to Tamale ahead of the main project.
He said the government had financed the replacement of old pumps at the existing water works, with the new pumps expected to become operational in November.
βIn the meantime, we have financed the change of the old pumps at the old water works, and so by next month, in November, when the new pumps start working, Tamale will see an increase in water supply even before the EU project,β he added.
The funding forms part of the Northern Ghana Water and Sanitation Project, which is aimed at improving water supply and sanitation services in Tamale and Yendi in the Northern Region, as well as Damongo in the Savannah Region.
The financing package comprises β¬98 million in grants and a β¬225 million highly concessional financing facility from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The projects are expected to expand access to reliable water services in the beneficiary communities.
