Manchester United Players Barred From Media Interviews After Lisandro Martinez’s Angry Outburst

According to a report by The Sun on Monday October 19, 2026, Manchester United players were reportedly prevented from speaking to journalists after their disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.

Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes indicated they were not permitted to give interviews as they passed through the mixed zone following the match. Fernandes reportedly told waiting reporters, “I can’t speak, I’m not allowed.”

The development followed Lisandro Martinez’s furious reaction after United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid. The Argentine defender criticised the club’s leadership and demanded more from director of football Jason Wilcox, subsequently receiving a fine.

However, there was reportedly no formal instruction from United’s media staff specifically prohibiting players from speaking to written journalists. The club’s players usually stop for interviews unless accompanied by press officers.

Harry Maguire was the only United player to speak with broadcast rights holders after the Leeds encounter. He also gave an interview to the club’s official television channel, MUTV.

Martinez was substituted at half-time because of a thigh problem during another frustrating performance from Michael Carrick’s team. United again surrendered points after taking the lead, extending their winless run to six matches across all competitions.

The draw left United 13th in the Premier League standings, with just one victory from their opening seven league fixtures. Bournemouth are scheduled to visit Old Trafford on Sunday, increasing the pressure on Carrick to improve results.

Speaking after the Leeds game, Carrick described the contest as difficult and tense, acknowledging that both sides had opportunities to influence the outcome.

The United manager praised his players’ application and commitment but admitted the match was closely contested. The latest result has intensified scrutiny of the team’s performances and raised further questions about the club’s current direction.
