Ida Odinga Breaks Silence After Receiving Special Award From London in Honour of Her Late Husband

Mama Ida Odinga has broken her silence after her late husband, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, received a posthumous award at the London Political Summit, sharing an emotional message that highlights his lifelong commitment to democracy, justice and good governance in Kenya and beyond.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Ida expressed gratitude for the special recognition, which she received on behalf of the family, while reflecting on the values that defined Raila’s political journey and continue to inspire generations.

“It was an honour to receive, on behalf of the family, the posthumous award conferred upon the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga at the London Political Summit,” Ida wrote.

The recognition highlights Raila’s contribution to democratic progress, a cause that remained central to his public life for decades.

The former Prime Minister was a prominent figure in Kenya’s struggle for political reforms, constitutional change and accountable leadership, making him one of the most influential personalities in the country’s modern political history.

Ida noted that the significance of the award extended beyond Kenya, pointing to her husband’s influence on democratic ideals across Africa and the wider international community.

“This recognition celebrates his lifelong struggle for democracy, justice and good governance, not only in Kenya but across Africa and the world,” she stated.

According to Ida, the award was received in London on behalf of Kenya by the Kenyan High Commission, represented by Amb. Irene Maswan and Amb. Ojambo.

The involvement of the High Commission placed Kenya at the centre of the presentation, as the honour recognised a leader whose political career shaped national conversations about democracy, governance and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Popularly known as Baba, Raila spent decades in public service, serving as Prime Minister and leading major political movements during periods of significant change in Kenya.

His political legacy continues to feature prominently in discussions about the country’s democratic development.

Ida also used the announcement to emphasise that her husband’s influence should extend beyond the award ceremony, urging future generations to uphold the principles he championed.

“Baba’s legacy lives on, inspiring generations to continue the pursuit of democracy, justice and a better world,” she wrote.

Her message presents the posthumous honour as a recognition not only of Raila’s past contribution but also of the ideals that she believes should continue guiding future generations.

The London Political Summit award adds to the tributes honouring the former Prime Minister, while Ida’s statement places renewed focus on his enduring legacy and the values associated with his decades in Kenya’s public life.
