Dr. Theo Acheampong Gets Top Appointment From Mahama’s Government
Dr Theo Acheampong has been appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to serve as Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Finance, with the development attracting both criticism and support online.
NPP communicator PK Sarpong was among those who reacted to the appointment. In a Facebook post, he questioned the development and suggested that the economist’s previous image as a neutral professional may now be under scrutiny.
“All the noise was for an appointment. It is always about interest and not Ghana. Fake neutral,” PK Sarpong stated.
His comments have led to discussions about whether Dr Acheampong remains politically independent following his appointment to a government position.
Others, however, have defended the President’s decision, pointing to Dr Acheampong’s academic qualifications and years of experience in economic research, finance and public policy.
Dr Acheampong is an economist and political risk analyst who has built a career around economic, energy and development issues. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Aberdeen in the UK and also earned a master’s degree in Energy Economics from the same university.
He has provided economic and energy-related advice to governments and international organisations and has been involved in various development projects across the African continent.
The economist is also a co-founder and Executive Director of the Imani Centre for Policy and Education. His work includes research, policy analysis, teaching and consulting.
Over the years, Dr Acheampong has become known for his commentary on Ghana’s economic situation, with his analysis receiving attention from both Ghanaian and international media outlets.
Supporters of his appointment believe his expertise will be useful to the Finance Ministry as the Mahama administration works to address the country’s economic difficulties. At the same time, the debate over whether his new government role affects his perceived neutrality is likely to continue.
