Ampofo Ankrah Reveals His Biggest Hope as Presidency Awaits Visa Scandal Report
Suspended National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has expressed strong confidence that the Presidency will clear him of any wrongdoing in connection with the World Cup visa scandal.
President John Dramani Mahama suspended Ankrah on Thursday, October 1, following allegations concerning a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the global football tournament.
The controversy emerged after reports that approximately US$623,000 had been collected from prospective travellers seeking assistance with visa applications and travel arrangements for the competition.
About 90 people were reportedly charged between US$10,000 and US$15,000 each, although only five allegedly secured visas.
Ankrah has maintained his innocence and said he remains confident that the ongoing investigations will vindicate him.
Speaking on the sidelines of Ghana’s Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria, he urged the public and journalists to exercise caution when discussing the allegations.
He also called on media practitioners to verify information before publishing reports and to handle the matter professionally.
Ankrah expressed satisfaction with the progress of the investigations, adding that he was awaiting the release of the final report.
“I’m very happy that so far the investigations have gone very smoothly, and we’re just waiting for the final report to be released,” he said.
Following his suspension, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong was appointed acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority.
