Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo is set to miss the Black Stars’ crucial double-header against Somalia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after suffering an injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for around eight weeks.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury during Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town, raising concerns over his availability for Ghana’s upcoming international assignments in November.
Medical assessments have reportedly indicated that Semenyo faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with a potential return targeted for December, depending on the progress of his recovery.
His absence would be a significant setback for the Black Stars, who are preparing for two important qualifying matches against Somalia as they seek to revive their hopes of reaching the 2027 AFCON in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Ghana currently sit bottom of Group C following a difficult start to their qualifying campaign, making the November fixtures particularly important for their ambitions of securing a place at the continental showpiece.
Semenyo’s pace, direct running and ability to contribute goals have made him an important attacking option for the national team.
His unavailability would leave the technical team with the task of finding suitable alternatives ahead of the decisive encounters.
The forward suffered the injury after coming on as a 77th-minute substitute for Jeremy Doku during City’s match against Ipswich Town.
He appeared to be in discomfort and headed straight down the tunnel at the final whistle.
Semenyo has made an encouraging start to the campaign at club level, registering two goals and three assists in nine appearances across all competitions since joining City from Bournemouth.
His expected absence will also affect City’s plans during a demanding period of the season, with the club competing in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and EFL Cup.
Ghana will turn attention to the players available to lead the attack against Somalia, with the technical team expected to explore alternative options while monitoring Semenyo’s recovery.
The November international window runs from November 10 to 18, meaning the City forward is unlikely to recover in time for the Black Stars’ double-header.
Unless his rehabilitation progresses significantly faster than anticipated, Ghana will have to navigate the crucial qualifiers without one of their leading attacking talents as they attempt to get their AFCON qualifying campaign back on track.
