Navratri 2026 Day 5: Maa Skandamata Vrat Katha, Puja Vidhi, Aarti and Mantras
Navratri 2026 is in full swing, and Day 5 of the festival celebrates Maa Skandamata, the fifth form of Goddess Durga. She is the mother of Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and is the embodiment of strength, wisdom and maternal compassion. Devotees believe that worshipping her on this day brings prosperity, courage, and spiritual upliftment.
Goddess Skandamata’s vahan is the lion and she is often picturised caarying baby Murugan – Lord Kartikeya – in her lap. She is depicted with four hands and carries lotus flowers in her upper two hands. While Lord Kartikeya is balanced on her third hand, her fourth hand is reserved for the Abhaya Mudra. She sits on a lotus flower and is hence also known as Goddess Padmasana. Those who worship this form of Goddess Parvati also have the good fortune of worshipping Lord Kartikeya. Maa Skandamata was the form assumed by Goddess Parvati to protect her son Lord Kartikeya, who was born to destroy the demon Tarakasura. This form of the Goddess highlights the themes of motherhood, fierce protection and nurturing wisdom.

Wake up early, light a fresh diya and offer Maa Skandamata red and yellow flowers and akshat. After this, invoke the Goddess’ energies and blessings by reciting her mantras and doing her aarti.
Jai teri ho Skand Mata. Paanchva naam tumhaara aata.
Sabke man ki jaanan haari. Jag janani sabki mahtari.
Teri jot jalata rahoon main. Hardam tujhe dhyaata rahoon main.
Kai naamon se tujhe pukaara. Mujhe ek hai tera sahaara.
Kahi pahadon par hai dera. Kai shahron mein tera basera.
Har mandir mein tere nazaare. Gun gaaye tere bhakt pyaare.
Bhakti apni mujhe dila do. Shakti meri bigdi bana do.
Indra aadi devta mil saare. Kare pukaar tumhaare dware.
Dusht daitya jab chadh kar aaye. Tu hi khand haath uthaye.
Daason ko sada bachane aayi. Bhakt ki aas pujaane aayi.
Begin the day by wearing yellow as it invokes the life force energy Maa Skandamata is associated with. For bhog, opt for milk-based sweets. Do the mantra jap 108 times before praying to the Goddess to remove all obstacles and bless you with wisdom, peace and clarity.
