UCL: ‘You have no right’ – Rooney slams Martinez over outburst against Man United
According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday October 14, 2026, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has criticised Lisandro Martinez following the defender’s comments about the club’s leadership and transfer strategy after their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Martinez questioned Manchester United’s recruitment decisions and suggested the club’s leadership had not provided enough support for the players and manager. He also directed criticism towards Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
However, Rooney believes the Argentine defender should focus on improving his own performances before publicly questioning the club’s decisions.
Speaking via the Mirror, Rooney acknowledged that Martinez wants Manchester United to invest in more players but argued that the defender’s performances have not been good enough.
“He clearly cares and wants the club to invest more money and more players, and if they do that, I think he’ll be one of the players out of the door if I’m being honest about his performances,” Rooney said.
The former United striker also agreed that the club needs reinforcements in attack and defence but questioned whether Martinez’s comments were appropriate at such a difficult time for the team.
Rooney further accused the defender of showing disrespect towards his teammates, arguing that his remarks could create more tension within the dressing room.
He suggested that captain Bruno Fernandes would have more authority to raise concerns about the club’s direction, although he insisted that such discussions should take place privately.
