Trouble Deepens for Sammy Gyamfi as Afenyo-Markin’s Lawyers Confirm Court Service
The legal dispute between Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi has escalated, with Afenyo-Markin’s lawyers insisting that Gyamfi has been officially served with court documents and must answer the defamation claims against him.
The disagreement stems from political arguments concerning GoldBod’s operations and alleged financial losses linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. What began as a public exchange of accusations has now progressed to the High Court.
Afenyo-Markin initiated the lawsuit against Gyamfi and other individuals after alleging that statements made against him had harmed his reputation. He is seeking legal redress over the disputed remarks.
Gyamfi, through his lawyers at Ayine & Partners, previously informed the High Court that they had his authorisation to receive the writ of summons and related documents on his behalf. The lawyers supplied the address of their East Legon chambers for service and asked that the arrangement be reflected in the court’s records.
Afenyo-Markin’s legal representatives have since maintained that service has been completed. They say Gyamfi is now expected to respond to the allegations through the court process.
The broader controversy involves questions about GoldBod’s operations and claims of losses associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. While Afenyo-Markin has demanded explanations, Gyamfi has denied the accusations and called on critics to substantiate their claims with evidence.
The case has drawn attention because both men occupy influential positions in Ghana. Afenyo-Markin leads the Minority in Parliament, while Gyamfi oversees GoldBod, which plays a role in the country’s gold trading sector.
The lawsuit will allow the parties to present their respective positions before the court, where the claims and defences will be considered under the law.
