Mahama Issues Strong Warning to NPP and Their Minority in Parliament After They Boycotted Forums
President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the NPP and its parliamentary Minority to abandon any proposed boycott of the national economic forum and contribute to discussions on how to improve Ghana’s economy.
He stressed that resolving the country’s economic problems requires collective effort and cooperation among political parties, businesses and other sectors of society. Mahama also recalled that the opposition did not participate in an earlier economic forum.
The President’s appeal follows criticism of his government’s borrowing and handling of the economy. Dr. Stephen Amoah, an NPP lawmaker, has claimed that the current administration borrowed GH¢59 billion over a relatively short period. He questioned the government’s ability to raise the funds needed to cover its expenditure.
Amoah further alleged that the amount exceeded the GH¢37 billion he claimed former President Nana Akufo-Addo borrowed while in office.
Beyond the economy, Mahama expressed concern about the growing challenge of youth unemployment. He described the situation as a major national concern and cautioned that prolonged unemployment could create wider security risks.
The President announced the creation of a Ministry of Youth Development to address issues affecting young people, including job creation and access to economic opportunities.
He maintained that his administration remained committed to overcoming Ghana’s economic difficulties and restoring stability. He also called on citizens to support the government’s efforts.
Mahama urged political parties, the business community, civil society groups and other relevant stakeholders to take part in the national economic dialogue. He emphasised that inclusive discussions would help generate sustainable solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
He expressed confidence that the government’s measures would produce positive outcomes, support economic growth and improve opportunities for people across Ghana.
