They Promised To Change The Law, But Now They Are Making It Worse — Dennis Miracles Aboagye Slams
The National Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has launched a scathing attack on the ruling administration, accusing them of double standards regarding institutional reforms. Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Aboagye criticized the government for failing to fulfill its historical promises to reform the framework governing appointments to the Electoral Commission (EC), claiming that current actions are worsening an already flawed system.
The critique comes in the wake of intense public debate sparked by the appointment and swearing-in of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. The opposition has heavily contested the inclusion, presenting evidence of Agbenyo’s active historical involvement in student politics and her alignment with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Aboagye argued that instead of depoliticizing independent state institutions and reforming appointment processes as previously promised, political actors are deepening partisan infiltration into bodies that demand absolute neutrality.
“They promised to change the law, but now they are making it worse,” Aboagye stated during the broadcast, emphasizing that placing known party affiliates into key electoral oversight positions undermines public confidence and compromises the credibility of future elections. He asserted that the independence of the EC remains a non-negotiable prerequisite for a healthy democracy, warning that repeating past mistakes under the guise of institutional continuity damages public trust.
The comments have added fuel to the ongoing national conversation concerning structural governance reforms, with civil society organizations and various political stakeholders divided over how to insulate state electoral bodies from partisan influence.
