Secondary is free University should be free for farmers children too–Okyeame on boosting agriculture
According to a report by Ghanaweb on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has urged the government to make university education free for the children of farmers, arguing that the policy would draw more young people into agriculture.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the rapper said the measure could be introduced as an added incentive for farmers, since education is already free at the basic and senior high school levels. He explained that covering university costs would ease the financial pressure on farming families and give more of their children the chance to pursue higher education. Hitz 103.9 FM shared highlights of the interview on X on October 12, 2026.
Okyeame Kwame noted that getting the younger generation interested in farming remains a challenge. In his view, many farmers hesitate to encourage their children to follow the same path because the profession does not offer enough rewards to make it attractive.
He recalled that a scholarship for farmers existed when he was growing up, and said he could not tell what had become of it. According to him, the absence of such support leaves farming families with little reason to hope their children will take over the land.
The musician also pointed to Ghana’s reliance on imported food, using onions as an example. He questioned why the country still brings in so many food items, and answered that farmers do not feel supported enough to want their children to join the trade.
Okyeame Kwame believes free university education would allow these children to acquire knowledge and learn modern technologies that could improve farming methods and raise productivity on the farm.
He added that agriculture is central to national development, since food production sustains other industries and supports the daily activities of people across the country.
His comments add to an ongoing conversation about how to make farming more attractive to young Ghanaians and reduce the country’s dependence on imported food.
