Prisoner charged with murder of inmate in North Carolina prison

SCOTLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW)– A prisoner at the Scotland Correctional Institution has been charged with murder after the death of another inmate in Sept., the sheriff’s office says.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 17, Scotland County deputies were called into the Scotland Correctional Institution for a reported homicide. When they arrived, they found Brian Alexander, 45, who had died from a stab wound.

Investigators found the suspect and moved him to another correctional facility the following day. Devaunte Barriet has now been charged with first-degree murder and possession of a weapon in prison.
