President Mahama announces 100,000-hectare oil palm plantation plan, rubber expansion for Western North
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish 100,000 hectares of oil palm plantations and expand rubber production as part of efforts to boost agriculture, create jobs and strengthen Ghanaβs local industries.
Receiving a delegation of chiefs from the Western North Region at the Jubilee House, President Mahama encouraged traditional authorities to invest in plantations and support initiatives that would provide sustainable employment opportunities for the youth.
He identified Western North as one of the regions targeted for increased rubber cultivation, urging chiefs to make land available and consider investing in plantations to support the government’s agricultural development agenda.
The President said the planned expansion formed part of the government’s five-year, US$10 billion New Economy Policy, which seeks to invest in strategic sectors of the economy to stimulate industrial growth and create jobs.
The policy will focus on areas including agriculture and agribusiness, textiles and garments, pharmaceuticals, and tourism, among other sectors.
President Mahama stressed the importance of collaboration between government and traditional authorities in unlocking the economic potential of their communities, particularly through agriculture and value addition.
He said expanding oil palm and rubber production would help strengthen local industries, create employment and provide young people with alternative livelihoods.
