NPP Rejects Mahama’s Latest Appointee
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has renewed its opposition to the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of Ghanaâs Electoral Commission (EC), with the partyâs Second Vice Chairman, Henry Nana Boakye, questioning President John Dramani Mahamaâs decision.
Speaking on GhanAkoma on Akoma FM, hosted by Sir John, Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, argued that the appointment raised concerns about the impartiality of the electoral management body.
He drew comparisons between the current appointment and the controversy surrounding the selection of Jean Mensa as EC Chairperson under the previous NPP administration.
According to Nana B, President Mahamaâs decision was particularly questionable given the criticism he had previously directed at the NPP over Jean Mensaâs appointment.
The NPP executive accused the President of disregarding the concerns of Ghanaians by appointing someone he described as an activist of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a position at the Electoral Commission.
Nana B also disclosed that the partyâs National Steering Committee was expected to meet to discuss the appointment and determine what further steps the NPP should take in response.
He stressed that the party remained opposed to Agbenyoâs selection, indicating that its position would not change despite the completion of the appointment process.
However, Nana B maintained that the NPPâs performance in the 2028 general elections would ultimately depend on its own preparations and political efforts rather than the appointment of a Deputy EC Chairperson.
He insisted that the party would take responsibility for its electoral prospects and would not allow the latest development to determine its chances at the polls.
The comments follow the swearing-in of two Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission. The NPP had earlier issued a statement on October 13, 2026, formally rejecting the appointments.
The controversy has generated political debate over the appointments, with questions being raised about the independence, neutrality and public confidence in Ghanaâs electoral administration.
Agbenyoâs appointment remains a subject of criticism from the opposition party, which says it has reservations about her suitability for the position.
