NAFDAC Raids Lagos Trade Fair Complex, Uncovers 20 Illegal Stores, Seizes Fake Drinks Worth ₦2bn
According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday October 14, 2026, NAFDAC has uncovered a major counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, confiscating suspected fake products valued at more than ₦2 billion.
The operation, carried out on Tuesday following credible intelligence, reportedly led to the discovery of more than 20 illegal stores allegedly involved in the production, storage or distribution of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate found individuals allegedly blending counterfeit versions of popular alcoholic beverage brands, preparing expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and storing prohibited imported products.
The agency said two suspects were arrested during the operation, while the recovered products were removed from the premises. The raid also exposed makeshift production areas allegedly used to repackage drinks and replace labels on beverage containers.
Footage shared by NAFDAC reportedly showed empty bottles, bottle caps, counterfeit labels, packaging materials and containers of liquids at the suspected production site. Products linked to the operation included Bullet energy drinks, Don Julio tequila and Jameson whisky, according to media reports.
The discovery has raised concerns about the potential health consequences of consuming counterfeit and adulterated beverages, particularly products that have expired or been repackaged without proper quality controls. Consumers may be unable to determine the actual contents or safety of drinks sold under the labels of established brands.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of illegal manufacturing, the revalidation of expired products and the sale of unregulated goods.
The agency advised members of the public to submit complaints through its official helpline, 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322), as it continues efforts to prevent unsafe products from reaching consumers.
The investigation is expected to establish the extent of the alleged operation and identify other individuals who may have been involved in the production and distribution of the seized beverages.
