Marvel star reveals he won’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday: ‘They didn’t call me’
0Jeremy Renner has confirmed he will not appear in the forthcoming Avengers instalment Doomsday, and joked that the superheroes are “gonna lose” because they left Hawkeye out.
The actor has played Clint Barton/Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011, first making his debut as the skilled archer in Thor.
He went on to reprise the role in The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
He voiced the character in Black Widow (2021) and returned to play Barton in the Disney+ series Hawkeye (2021), with Hailee Steinfeld as fellow archer Kate Bishop.
Speaking at Comic Con Liverpool, Renner ruled out Hawkeye’s return, saying: “Doomsday, I’m not in, so the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know.”
“They didn’t call me, so it’s their fault they’re gonna lose,” he added, laughing.
The Mayor of Kingstown star said he was “actually excited” to revisit Avengers: Endgame in theatres, which has been re-released. The encore adds around four minutes of new footage, including a scene in which Tom Hiddleston’s Loki visits Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), and post-credit sequences introducing Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.
“I’m going to take my daughter to see it, she was a little young when it came out,” Renner said.
The re-release opened with an estimated $86m worldwide and added $126m to the film’s lifetime gross, taking it to approximately $2.925bn and putting it ahead of Avatar to reclaim the title of the highest-grossing film of all time.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be one of Marvel’s biggest crossovers yet, bringing together heroes from across three universes to confront Doctor Doom. The film will bring together several original X-Men stars, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops, with the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and the Wakandans.
Last year, Renner revealed that Hawkeye’s second season was stalled over the fact that Disney had offered him half the salary he received for the first season.
“I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over?” he said on the High Performance podcast in May 2025. He was alluding to the injuries he sustained in a near-fatal snowmobile accident in January 2023 that required him to be airlifted to hospital to be treated for more than 30 broken bones.
He added that he still loved the character and was open to returning to the role but felt he had to “defend” himself.
“I didn’t ask for any more money, mind you. Just pay me what I made the first season!”
In July last year, Renner told Empire magazine that he was “always happy to be in that world”.
“I love all those guys, I love the character,” he said, adding that he was certain Marvel would go ahead with a second season of the show. “And I’m happy to do it. My body’s getting ready for something like that. I don’t know if anybody wants to see me in tights but my body will look good in the tights,” he said.
Avengers: Doomsday is due in cinemas on 16 December 2026.
