Man Utd Reach Immediate Decision on Sacking Michael Carrick After Atletico Madrid Defeat

According to a report by TeamTalk on Wednesday October 14, 2026, Manchester United have no immediate plans to dismiss Michael Carrick despite their disappointing Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who also discussed Antonio Conte’s potential availability.

The Red Devils suffered a 2-0 loss in Spain on Tuesday, extending concerns about their performances as they continue struggling to produce consistent results across domestic and European competitions.

United’s difficult campaign has included collecting just six points from six Premier League matches, alongside an early Carabao Cup exit following their elimination in the competition’s third round.

Despite the disappointing results, the club’s hierarchy reportedly remains committed to Carrick for now. Previous reports indicated that Manchester United’s co-owners, INEOS, were prepared to give the manager additional time following earlier setbacks.

Romano explained that no immediate managerial changes are expected, insisting United have not begun discussions with alternative candidates or contacted another coach about potentially taking charge at Old Trafford.

He said: “Manchester United are yet to make contact with any other manager to start a conversation or to prepare the future.” The club currently continues supporting Carrick.

However, Romano warned that patience will depend heavily on upcoming performances. United are desperate to improve their results, with the manager facing increasing pressure if the team’s disappointing form continues.

He stressed: “This is a results industry. Manchester United need to change their results as soon as possible.” His comments underline that Carrick’s position could become more difficult without rapid improvement.

Romano also highlighted United’s challenging upcoming schedule, suggesting the next matches will be important in determining whether the club’s current confidence in Carrick remains justified or whether concerns intensify further.

Although Antonio Conte has been mentioned in discussions surrounding United’s managerial situation, the available information indicates that the club has not yet opened talks with alternative candidates, leaving Carrick in charge for now.
