Kenya Met Warns of Rainfall in 29 Counties, Issues Strong Wind Alêrt

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in 29 counties through Thursday, October 15, warning residents in parts of northern and coastal Kenya to prepare for strong winds exceeding 25 knots.

In a 24-hour weather forecast released on Wednesday, October 14, acting director Edward Muriuki said the outlook would cover the period from 9pm Wednesday to 9pm Thursday.

The department listed several counties in the central, Rift Valley, western and Nyanza regions among areas expected to receive rainfall.

In central Kenya, the affected counties include Embu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Murang’a, alongside Lamu on the coast. Mandera and Marsabit are also expected to experience rainfall.

In the Rift Valley region, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Baringo, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho and Bomet are among the counties listed in the forecast.

Western and Nyanza counties expected to receive rainfall include Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.

The forecast indicates that Nairobi is not among the counties expected to receive rainfall during the period.

The department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to approximately 46 kilometres per hour, in parts of Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Garissa, Lamu and Tana River counties.

On temperatures, Garissa is expected to record a high of 35°C, followed by Wajir at 34°C and Tana River at 33°C.

Coastal counties will experience temperatures of up to 31°C in Kilifi, while Mombasa and Kwale are expected to reach 30°C.

Nyandarua is forecast to be the coldest county, with temperatures dropping to 9°C overnight before rising to a maximum of 21°C during the day.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor official weather updates and exercise caution during periods of strong winds and thunderstorms.
