“I Told The Chief Of Staff To The Pres., If The Pres. Doesn’t Win In Lagos,Don’t Say We’ve Won–Wike
According to a report by Punch on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has warned governors and other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council against claiming victory in the 2027 presidential election if they fail to deliver their respective states to President Bola Tinubu.
Wike issued the warning on Wednesday during the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, where he was appointed coordinator for the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
The minister stressed that the primary responsibility of every member of the council should be to work towards securing Tinubu’s re-election, regardless of the position held within the campaign structure.
He maintained that members of the council must demonstrate their commitment by ensuring that the President receives the necessary electoral support in the areas assigned to them.
Wike’s remarks focused on the need for campaign officials to take responsibility for the electoral performance of their respective states rather than relying on the overall activities of the campaign council to claim success in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Wike emphasised that members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council should concentrate on delivering electoral results for Tinubu in their respective areas.
He argued that those entrusted with responsibilities within the campaign structure must understand that their appointments come with the obligation to work towards the President’s re-election.
According to the FCT minister, holding a position in the campaign council should not be treated as an achievement in itself if the individual concerned fails to secure support for the President in the assigned state.
He urged the governors and other political leaders involved in the campaign to prioritise the outcome of the election and take their responsibilities seriously.
Wike’s comments highlighted his position that the success of the campaign should be measured by the votes secured for Tinubu rather than the number of political figures serving on the council or the positions they occupy within its structure.
Wike also warned that campaign officials should not assume that the President had won an election without considering the results from individual states.
He maintained that the responsibility of the campaign council extended beyond attending meetings, accepting appointments or participating in political activities.
Instead, he said, members should work to ensure that Tinubu receives electoral support in the states under their supervision.
The minister’s remarks placed particular emphasis on accountability among political leaders and campaign coordinators, stressing that each person must contribute to the campaign’s objectives.
He suggested that political leaders should be prepared to account for the performance of the President in their respective areas when the election takes place.
His warning was directed at governors and other members of the campaign council who might seek to celebrate a victory without first ensuring that Tinubu had secured the required support in the states for which they were responsible.
The FCT minister made the comments after his appointment as coordinator for the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State within the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
The appointment placed him among the officials assigned responsibilities in the campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
During the inauguration, Wike stressed that the priority of the council should remain Tinubu’s re-election, regardless of individual positions or political standing.
He urged members to approach their assignments with a clear understanding of the expectations attached to their roles.
The minister’s comments also underscored the importance of securing support at the state level, noting that the overall campaign effort depended on the contributions of officials working in different locations.
He maintained that members should focus on their assigned responsibilities and avoid making claims of victory without considering whether the President had won in the states expected to deliver votes for him.
Wike further illustrated his position by referring to a conversation with the Chief of Staff to the President, using Lagos State as an example of why campaign officials should not assume victory without examining the results in individual states.
He argued that the outcome in each state should be taken seriously when assessing the performance of the campaign council.
According to the minister, members must ensure that the President receives electoral support in the areas under their responsibility before making claims about the election result.
His remarks reflected his emphasis on state-by-state accountability and the need for political leaders to work towards the campaign’s stated objective.
Wike maintained that members of the council should focus on delivering results rather than relying on their appointments or assuming that Tinubu’s re-election was guaranteed.
He said the campaign’s priority should be securing victory for the President in the 2027 presidential election.
Addressing the gathering in Abuja, Wike reiterated his warning that campaign officials should not claim victory for Tinubu if the President failed to win in states where they were expected to mobilise support.
He stressed that the responsibility of the council was to work towards the President’s re-election and that every member should take the assignment seriously.
The minister also made it clear that the position held by an individual within the campaign structure should not be used as a substitute for electoral performance.
Referring to his discussion with the Chief of Staff to the President, Wike stated, “I told the Chief of Staff to the President, if the president doesn’t win in Lagos, don’t say we’ve won.”
