Ghanaians React As President Mahama Sends A Message To Chiefs About Galamsey

According to a report by JoyNews today being Wednesday, October 14, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has urged chiefs and traditional authorities to join forces with the government in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, as part of efforts to protect Ghana’s water bodies and natural environment.

The President’s appeal underscores the need for stronger collaboration between government institutions and local leaders to address the environmental damage associated with illegal mining activities.

Galamsey has remained a serious concern in Ghana because of its impact on rivers, forests and agricultural lands. Mining operations that disregard environmental regulations can introduce harmful substances into water bodies, destroy vegetation and leave large areas of land unsuitable for farming and other productive activities.

The pollution of rivers is particularly worrying because many communities rely on these water sources for domestic purposes, farming and other daily activities. Protecting them is therefore essential to public health, food production and the general well-being of residents.

President Mahama is calling on traditional leaders to use their influence to discourage illegal mining within their communities and encourage residents to support lawful and environmentally responsible activities.

Chiefs can also contribute by educating community members about the dangers of galamsey and cooperating with relevant authorities to identify and report illegal mining operations. Their participation could help strengthen local efforts to protect rivers and prevent further environmental destruction.

The appeal also points to the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the problem. While government agencies have a duty to enforce mining regulations, cooperation from traditional authorities, community members and other stakeholders is necessary to achieve lasting results.

The continued destruction of water bodies could have consequences extending beyond mining communities, affecting water treatment, agriculture and the livelihoods of people who depend on these resources.

As the government pursues measures to tackle illegal mining, President Mahama’s appeal seeks to make traditional leaders active partners in protecting Ghana’s environment.
