Cat Matlala Withdraws Bail Application in Pretoria Fraud Case

According to the State, Matlala is accused of fraud, forgery, and violating the Identification Act. Prosecutors allege that he used a fraudulent Eswatini identity document under the name Vusimuzi Dlamini as part of a scheme to secure a high-end rental property in Waterkloof Heights.

Investigators claim that Matlala also submitted falsified bank statements to convince the property owner that he was financially capable of paying the monthly rent of R95,000. The lease agreement was reportedly linked to a luxury mansion valued at approximately R1.2 million.

The State further alleges that Matlala presented himself as a member of Eswatini’s royal family in order to gain credibility and secure the prestigious property. Prosecutors believe the alleged misrepresentations played a key role in obtaining the lease agreement.

Matlala’s decision to abandon his bail application means he will remain in custody while the case continues through the court system. His legal team has not publicly disclosed the reasons behind the withdrawal.

The case has attracted significant public attention due to Matlala’s profile and the nature of the allegations. Authorities are continuing their investigation as they prepare for the next stages of the prosecution.

Meanwhile, three co-accused in the matter have already been granted bail. Matlala’s wife, Tsakane Matlala, along with Claudette Masethe and Given Makofane, were each released on bail of R20,000 last month. Their cases remain linked to the broader investigation.

The court is expected to hear further evidence in the coming months as prosecutors seek to prove the charges against the accused. As with all criminal proceedings, the accused remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
