Alleged Underworld Figure ‘Cat’ Matlala Caught With Fake Property Docs — Gauteng Homes at Stake

Vusimuzi, popularly known as Cat Matlala, appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning to face a fraud charge linked to an alleged property ownership scheme.

According to the allegations, Matlala is suspected of using fraudulent documents to facilitate the transfer of several residential and commercial properties across Gauteng. The documents allegedly contained forged signatures, false notarial seals and manipulated title deed information, which investigators believe may have been used to mislead property registration officials and conveyancing professionals.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Tebogo Mokhine reportedly confirmed that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation arrested the 43-year-old suspect the previous week following an investigation that had been underway for several months.

The National Prosecuting Authority was also reported to have opposed his release on bail, citing concerns about the possibility of him fleeing while the investigation continues. However, the court’s decision on bail and any conditions attached to his release had not been established in the information provided.

The allegations have raised concerns about the security of property ownership records and the potential consequences of fraudulent transfers for homeowners.

One woman from Centurion, whose identity was withheld, reportedly described her distress after a debt-collection agency approached her home in March with documents allegedly identifying Matlala as its registered owner. She maintained that her family had purchased the four-bedroom property outright approximately ten years earlier.

The woman reportedly presented a copy of the original purchase agreement as evidence of her family’s ownership, highlighting the uncertainty such disputes can create for property owners.

Matlala’s legal representative, attorney Nkosi Dlamini, was reported to have indicated that his client disputes the allegations. The defence is expected to challenge the evidence presented by the prosecution, including the basis on which the fraud charge was brought.

Investigators are also reportedly examining documents connected to at least seven other property transfers considered suspicious. Further inquiries may help establish whether the transactions are connected and determine the extent of any alleged wrongdoing.

The case is expected to draw attention to the safeguards used to verify property transactions and prevent fraudulent changes to ownership records. For homeowners, the allegations underscore the importance of maintaining property documents and ensuring that ownership records are accurate.

Matlala remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.
