Abu Jinapor Breaks Silence on Evacuation Funds as Minority Demands Financial Records
The Minority in Parliament has renewed its demand for an independent audit of the money spent by the Ministry of Finance to evacuate Ghanaian nationals from South Africa, insisting that the public deserves clear answers about how the funds were used.
The renewed call comes after the ministry responded to concerns previously raised by the Minority. However, instead of considering the matter settled, the Minority says the response has failed to address the key questions surrounding the expenditure.
Hon. Abu Jinapor, speaking on the issue, accused the Majority of turning the discussion into a personal attack against Minority members who are demanding accountability. According to him, the response should have focused on providing records to justify the spending rather than attacking those asking questions.
The disagreement has brought renewed attention to the use of public funds and the responsibility of government officials to explain how taxpayers’ money is spent.
The evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa was an issue that required attention to the safety and welfare of citizens. However, the Minority’s position is that the importance of the operation does not remove the need for a proper account of the money used.
For many Ghanaians, the central question is straightforward: how much was spent on the evacuation, and are there clear records showing how the money was used?
An independent audit could help establish the details of the expenditure, assess the supporting documents and determine whether the funds were properly accounted for. It could also help address concerns if the available records are complete and satisfactory.
At the same time, calling for an audit does not automatically mean that wrongdoing has taken place. The purpose of such an exercise would be to examine the records and establish the facts. Any conclusion about misuse of funds would need to be supported by evidence.
The disagreement also highlights the role of Parliament in checking government spending. Members of the Minority are expected to question the actions of the government, while the relevant ministries have a responsibility to provide information that helps Parliament carry out its oversight duties.
However, political disagreements can sometimes shift public attention away from the actual issue. In this case, the important matter is whether the Ministry of Finance has provided enough information to explain the expenditure and whether an independent review is necessary.
