Today’s Headlines: Why I’m Supporting Tinubu For Second Term-Quadri, Obasanjo Demand More Oil Revenue
Veteran Nollywood actor Yinka Quadri has explained why he is supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, pointing to the President’s long-standing assistance to entertainment practitioners and infrastructure projects.
Quadri said his support for Tinubu was not motivated by personal gain but by the help the President had extended to members of the entertainment industry, dating back to his tenure as Lagos State governor.
The actor made this known during an appearance on the African A-List interview, where he recalled how Tinubu reportedly paid the medical bills of late comic actor Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, during his illness.
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has renewed calls for an increase in the 13 per cent derivation allocation to oil-producing states, arguing that the current arrangement does not give the Niger Delta adequate benefits from its natural resources.
Diri spoke on Monday at the inauguration of the Crude Distillation Unit of the $1bn Azikel Refinery at Obunagha, Yenagoa Local Government Area, where former President Olusegun Obasanjo challenged the project’s promoter, Dr Azibapu Eruani, to complete the facility within 12 months.
The governor said oil-producing communities continued to bear the environmental and social costs of extraction without commensurate benefits, urging the region to become more involved in petroleum processing and industrial development.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the African Union Counter-Terrorism Centre have warned that terrorist groups are increasingly exploiting social media, cryptocurrencies and emerging technologies to recruit members, conceal funds and coordinate attacks across West Africa and the Sahel.
They raised the alarm in Abuja on Tuesday at a three-day regional training conference on detecting and disrupting terrorists’ exploitation of information and communication technologies and emerging technologies.
The Acting Director, AU Counter-Terrorism Centre, Idriss Lalalli, said terrorist organisations, including the Islamic State West Africa Province, Boko Haram and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, were expanding their activities through digital technologies.
The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, expressed deep sorrow over the death of a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, Oluwatosin Abidakun, who lost her life in a road crash involving an articulated truck in Ibadan on Monday.
The PUNCH reports that the late serving member was crushed to death while several other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries after a trailer reportedly rammed into multiple vehicles around the Agodi Gardens, in Ibadan North Local Government Area of the state, on Monday.
The deceased, who had recently resumed her primary assignment at the state House of Assembly, was on her way home after the day’s work with another corps member, who also recently resumed service at the Assembly, when the incident occurred.
