Three Dina police officials suspended after detainee’s death

JHELUM  – Three Dina police officials, including the station house officer (SHO), were suspended following the reported suicide of a man held in custody over an allegation of sexually assaulting his daughter, police sources said on Monday.

The man was arrested after his daughter lodged a complaint accusing him of sexual assault and was subsequently detained at Dina police station for investigation.

A Jhelum police official, speaking to The Nation on condition of anonymity, said the detainee had been provided with a meal and a piece of cloth to cover it. He allegedly used the cloth to strangle himself while in custody on Sunday night.

Taking notice of the incident, District Police Officer Jhelum SP Chaudhry Shafique suspended SHO Sub-Inspector Shoaib Kiyani, a moharrar and a constable over alleged negligence. Departmental proceedings have also been initiated against the three officials.

The police official said the allegations against the deceased had yet to be substantiated through investigation. The identities of the man and his daughter were being withheld to protect their privacy and spare the family further distress.

The circumstances surrounding the death, including the possible negligence of the suspended officials, remain under investigation. The departmental proceedings will determine whether any misconduct or dereliction of duty occurred.
