The Regime We Put In Power In Iran By Killing Its Leaders Is More Hardline, More Militarized” Eyre

Former US State Department Persian-language spokesman Alan Eyre has warned that Iran’s current leadership is more militaristic and uncompromising than the administration it replaced.

During a panel discussion about the Iran war, featured in a video posted on Piers Morgan’s platform on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Eyre was asked to respond to Professor Mohammad Marandi’s view that Iran was the innocent party in the conflict.

Eyre agreed that the war was unjustified, poorly planned and immoral, describing it as a damaging moment for the United States. Nevertheless, he argued that the failures of American policy did not absolve the Iranian government of responsibility for its actions.

He characterised Iran as a corrupt authoritarian state that represses its population while pursuing greater regional influence.

According to Eyre, the removal of Iran’s former leaders had produced an even more hardline and heavily militarised government, one that was less concerned with the needs of ordinary citizens.

He further challenged the Trump administration’s assumption that greater military force would compel Iran to capitulate or reach a compromise. Instead, he warned that increased pressure would likely trigger further Iranian retaliation against regional targets.

Eyre said the conflict had no clear moral victor and criticised the United States and Israel for launching attacks against Iran, arguing that there was no immediate threat to justify military action.

He also highlighted the Trump administration’s emphasis on military strength and coercion over diplomatic engagement.

Finally, Eyre respectfully rejected Robert Harward’s interpretation of the conflict as an ideological struggle, maintaining that Iran’s pursuit of national interests resembled the strategy followed during the Shah’s rule.
