Terror In Niger State As Fleeing Bandits From Zamfara Force Hundreds Of Residents To Desert Homes

Hundreds of terrified residents from the Rukukuje area in the Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State are currently fleeing their homes following a fresh, aggressive push by bandits from neighbouring Zamfara State.

The mass displacement, which unfolded this morning, has forced the panic-stricken residents to wade through a river in a desperate bid to reach safety in Shambo city.

A video clip shared on X on Tuesday by usman with handle @secmxx seen by SaharaReporters depict a harrowing scene of a chaotic exodus.

Residents from Rukukuje area in Rijau axis of Niger state are escaping a new bandits push from Zamfara state this morning, they are heading towards shambo city…. https://t.co/vSSfJbBxAy

— usman (@secmxx) October 13, 2026 The video show a massive crowd of displaced persons, predominantly women, children, and the elderly, wading through the muddy waters of a river. Many were seen balancing heavy loads of salvaged food items, cooking condiments, and personal effects on their heads, while others pushed motorcycles through the water. The sheer volume of the crowd underscores the scale of the panic and the immediacy of the threat.

Local sources confirmed that the displacement was triggered by a coordinated advance of bandits from the Zamfara axis early Tuesday morning.

“They are heading towards Shambo city,” a source familiar with the movement stated. “The bandits are pushing hard, and the people had no choice but to run for their lives.”

The Rijau axis of Niger State has increasingly become a flashpoint for banditry, serving as a vulnerable corridor for criminal elements spilling over from the neighboring Zamfara State, where a protracted security crisis has persisted for years.

This latest mass exodus highlights the stark failure of the Nigerian security architecture to contain the escalating violence in the North.

Despite repeated claims by security agencies of ongoing operations to flush out bandits, armed groups continue to operate with impunity, systematically displacing rural communities and crippling agricultural activities.

The fleeing residents of Rukukuje are now facing an uncertain future in Shambo, where the capacity to absorb such a sudden influx of displaced persons remains severely stretched.

The humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating, with urgent needs for shelter, food, and medical care.

As the crowd continues to wade through the river, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the relentless insecurity ravaging northern Nigeria, where citizens are left to fend for themselves in the face of relentless terror. The federal and state governments have yet to issue a statement regarding the latest displacement or the security breach that triggered it.

When SaharaReporters reached to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, he said he would verify the incident.
