Supnorters of Kennedy Agyepong Demands Bawumia To Break Silence Over Conflicts In The Npp

Fresh divisions have emerged within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as supporters of former Assin Central lawmaker Kennedy Agyapong threaten to abandon Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign if the party’s leadership fails to resolve their grievances.

The group, made up of grassroots members who identify themselves as loyalists of Agyapong, said they were increasingly uncomfortable with the direction of the party, particularly what they described as dictatorial tendencies among some senior officials during internal electoral processes.

The supporters explained that following Agyapong’s defeat in the NPP presidential primary, they put aside their disappointment and agreed to rally behind Bawumia for the 2028 elections in the interest of party unity.

They now say that decision could change if the party leadership does not take immediate steps to address the concerns they have raised.

Kofi Ababrese, the group’s spokesperson and a known supporter of Kennedy Agyapong in Kumasi, pointed to the recent selection process involving polling station agents as an example of the alleged unfair treatment within the party.

According to him, the manner in which some party matters are being handled suggests that a small number of individuals are exercising excessive control over the organisation.

Ababrese warned that the NPP was increasingly being run as though it were the private property of certain individuals rather than a political party belonging to its members.

The group maintained that it would not accept any attempt to manipulate party structures for the benefit of a select few at the expense of ordinary supporters.

Another major concern raised by the group was Bawumia’s failure to publicly address the internal disputes. Ababrese questioned the flagbearer’s silence, alleging that his reluctance to intervene in what the group considers improper conduct could create doubts about his commitment to fairness within the party.

“We are deeply worried by the continuous silence of Dr. Bawumia,” Ababrese said.

He further questioned how Bawumia could convince Ghanaians that he was capable of leading the country if he could not help restore unity and discipline within his own political organisation.

The supporters warned that allowing the disagreements to continue could weaken the NPP and increase its chances of suffering another electoral defeat in 2028.

Ababrese also made allegations concerning money purportedly accumulated during the Akufo-Addo administration, warning that grassroots members would resist any situation in which party leaders allegedly benefited while the organisation suffered. These claims were not independently established in the statement.

The group has therefore called for immediate measures to promote reconciliation, transparency and peaceful cooperation among party members.

It warned that if its concerns remained unresolved, supporters could launch an internal movement demanding changes in the party’s leadership or withdraw their support from the NPP altogether during the 2028 elections.

The warning could pose a challenge for Bawumia, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where the NPP has historically enjoyed considerable support. A sustained withdrawal of support by Kennedy Agyapong’s loyalists could affect grassroots mobilisation and create further difficulties for the party as it prepares for the next general elections.
