Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello’s Post-Divorce Drama Just Got Messier Thanks to His New Memoir
Rich Fury/VF20//Getty ImagesSofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello may have gone their separate ways a few years ago, but there’s some renewed interest in their split thanks to Joe’s new memoir, Bloodlines. The former flames were married for seven years before they separated in 2023, and the True Blood alum is getting candid about the real reason he filed for divorce at the time.
As for what’s gone down since then…it’s kind of a lot. Scroll ahead if you want to catch up with a chronological rundown of what’s gone on with Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello, years after their divorce.
According to court docs obtained by People, Joe filed for divorce from the Modern Family alum for irreconcilable differences, and listed their date of separation as July 2.
“We have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the exes said in a statement to Page Six at the time. "As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect for our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”
During an interview with Spanish newspaper El País, Sofía claimed the reason she and Joe broke up had to do with them being in different places in their lives.
“I’m newly divorced from my second husband, who I was with for 10 years. My marriage broke up because my husband was younger. He wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” she said at the time. “I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore. I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children.”
According to a filing obtained by People on February 9, 2024, Joe and Sofîa’s divorce was finalized as they “entered into a written agreement regarding their property and their marriage … which is being or has been submitted to the court.”
A year after they announced their breakup, Joe slammed Sofía’s previous claims that the relationship ended because he wanted kids and she didn’t.
“There’s been a lot said in the press about me wanting a family. That’s simply not true,” he said in an interview with Men’s Journal.
“We did try to have a family for the first year and a half,” he explained. "And we had a huge conversation right out of the gate during the first month we dated. I said, ‘If you’re done with kids, then I understand. Just tell me, and I’ll know what this is, and that’s okay.’ But that wasn’t the case with her. And I swore to her that I would never leave if it didn’t work out. And I didn’t.”
In an interview with People promoting his new memoir, Bloodlines, Joe revealed he had secretly been dealing with a nearly-fatal autoimmune illness since he first got married to Sofía in 2015.
Years after he slammed his ex’s comments about not wanting to start a family, he admitted that he gave up the idea because of his illness. He shared that they had considered egg donors after some failed IVF attempts, but he changed his mind because he “didn’t want to die” and leave her with a child “who wasn’t biologically hers.”
“There were things said and printed about me that were false,” he told the outlet, adding that his memoir was his way of “correcting” the narrative.
After Joe spoke of him and Sofía’s relationship in an interview with People, her son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, shared an Instagram Story including a chart comparing “good” men and “narcissistic” men.
“Remember kids, when dealing with a narcissist, it doesn’t matter how much you do for them, because they will resent you for it and nothing will ever be enough, and they’ll always somehow try to paint you as the bad guy,” he seemingly wrote alongside the post, which was reshared to Sofía’s Stories.
It didn’t take long for their followers to speculate that the post could possibly be a dig at Joe—especially because he would later reveal that Sofía had made a life-saving decision for him during an emergency surgery while he was unconscious.
Well…Joe was straight-up asked about Sofía’s post during an interview with CBS Mornings’ Gayle King. And he responded!
“Her son posted a thing about, ‘This is what happens when you deal with a narcissistic man,’ and she has liked that post,” she said, before asking, “They appear to be saying that basically, it’s terrible what happened to you but the bottom line is that you’re a narcissist. What do you say to that?”
“Well, I think anybody who said that should read the book first and understand what the book is actually about because it’s not about that. It’s about the suffering I went through,” Joe responded.
“The trauma and the pain affected everyone in my life, including me, in ways thatyou can’t predict, and it was tough,” he told Gayle, emphasizing that his book “isn’t about his marriage.”
In Joe’s new book, he details the downfall of his marriage with Sofía, claiming the relationship had “become devoid of any emotionality whatsoever.” He separately alleged that Sofía “refused” to hug him or show affection and “made fun of his pet Chihuahua,” Bubbles, who he adopted when he considered ending his own life.
Sofía has yet to respond to the claims in Joe’s memoir, but we’ll be back with more as we have it!
