Michael Owen U-turns on Premier League title race prediction
Michael Owen has changed his Premier League title prediction after being impressed by Manchester City’s performances under Enzo Maresca, although he still believes Arsenal remain the team to beat this season.
According to a report by Metro on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, the former Liverpool striker admitted he had doubts about City’s title chances before the campaign began but now expects them to challenge Arsenal for the trophy.
Arsenal have won five of their opening six league matches and returned to winning ways with a comeback victory over Leeds United after the international break.
However, City have made a perfect start to their league campaign and strengthened their title credentials with a convincing 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Owen had previously questioned whether City could maintain their dominance following the departures of Pep Guardiola and influential players, including Rodri, Bernardo Silva and John Stones.
The former England international believed those changes could make it difficult for the club to sustain its success, particularly with a new manager taking charge.
“I’ve been really impressed with them,” Owen told Metro, admitting that he had doubts about City before the season started.
Despite those concerns, Owen now believes City have the quality and experience to compete with Arsenal throughout the campaign.
He continues to favour the defending champions, describing Arteta’s side as a well-organised team capable of building on last season’s title success.
However, City’s early performances have convinced him that the race could be closer than he initially expected.
Owen also praised the appointment of Maresca, suggesting that the manager’s previous experience at the club has helped provide continuity during a period of significant change.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has gone further by backing City to win the Premier League title following their impressive performance against his former club.
“Before a ball was kicked, I fancied Arsenal to just carry on, but now, what are we, six, seven games in, I’d put my money on Manchester City,” Gerrard said on The Overlap.
Gerrard’s prediction highlights the growing confidence surrounding City after their strong start to the season.
