Manchester United Forgotten Man Set For Return After Michael Carrick Update

According to a report by London Evening Standard on Tuesday October 13, 2026, Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt could return to action against Atletico Madrid after recovering from a back injury that has kept him sidelined for almost a year.

Michael Carrick’s team travel to Spain for their second Champions League league-phase fixture, encouraged by De Ligt’s progress after previously defeating Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford.

The Dutch centre-back suffered the problem during a match against Crystal Palace and recently travelled with United to Fulham, although he was not included in the matchday squad.

De Ligt’s recovery gathered momentum after he featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Lausanne-Sport, giving the coaching staff greater confidence about his readiness to return.

Speaking before Tuesday’s encounter, Carrick confirmed that he would be comfortable giving the defender minutes, while stressing that his workload would require careful management.

ā€œI’m definitely comfortable with him playing,ā€ Carrick explained, acknowledging that the important consideration would be deciding when to introduce him and how long he could play.

The United manager added that De Ligt had participated in the Lausanne friendly and completed considerable training, although the club continued monitoring his progress to avoid rushing his recovery.

Carrick also expressed confidence in the defender, suggesting that his return could provide Manchester United with another option in central defence during an important European assignment.

However, United have suffered fresh injury setbacks ahead of their meeting with Atletico Madrid, with midfield youngster Kobbie Mainoo and defender Luke Shaw remaining in England.

Carrick confirmed that both players picked up knocks during United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham, ruling them out of Tuesday’s Champions League contest in the Spanish capital.

United currently occupy 12th place in the Premier League following an inconsistent start to the campaign, increasing pressure on Carrick after Tottenham’s late equaliser denied them victory.

De Ligt’s possible comeback therefore offers encouragement, although United must manage his minutes carefully while attempting to improve their performances against Atletico Madrid away.
