Kano Faces Two-Day Power Disruption Over TCN Line Upgrade

Kano metropolis may experience a two-day power outage as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and other stakeholders plan a load diversion on the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line to facilitate the elongation of Towers 27 and 28.

According to a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the proposal was discussed at a coordination meeting held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the TCN Regional Conference Room in Kano, with participants reviewing alternative supply arrangements, network capacity and safety measures for the planned exercise.

The meeting was chaired by the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, and attended by representatives of NISO, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works.

In his opening remarks, Bello expressed confidence in the contractors’ competence but stressed the need for a thorough assessment of proposed technical connections and switching arrangements before implementation to guarantee operational safety and network reliability.

The NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, emphasised strict compliance with the Grid Code, particularly the requirement for planned outage applications to be submitted at least 14 days before the proposed exercise for approval.

Also speaking, the Head of Operations and Maintenance at KEDCO, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting the load served by Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to alternative substations, including Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV, within the proposed two-day outage window.

During the discussions, participants examined the capacity of the network to accommodate the diverted load and considered alternative supply options from Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations.

They observed that Hadejia 132kV Substation could not accommodate the entire 60-megawatt load earmarked for diversion, underscoring the need to assess other available options to ensure a reliable supply arrangement during the exercise.

The stakeholders also stressed the importance of protecting personnel and equipment throughout the planned works.
