A civil society organisation has called for the adoption of the Girls Act model as a strategy to reduce HIV infections among young girls, warning that the disease remains prevalent, particularly among adolescent girls and young women. The call was made on Tuesday during activities to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child in Abuja. It follows concerns that women and adolescent girls bear a disproportionate burden of HIV infections compared with men and boys, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The advocacy group noted that HIV could be better controlled if girls living with HIV were supported to remain on treatment, while those who were HIV-negative learned skills to prevent new infections and make informed decisions. According to the Advocacy Lead at AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Steve Aborisade, although significant progress has been recorded in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, more work is needed to support young girls and vulnerable women. Quoting the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Aborisade said women account for more than 50 per cent of people living with HIV globally and roughly 60 per cent in sub-Saharan Africa. “Adolescent girls and young women aged 15 to 24 years are up to two to three times more likely to acquire HIV than young males of the same age. “Biologically, women face a roughly two-fold higher acquisition risk per unprotected heterosexual act due to a larger mucosal surface area and longer exposure to seminal fluids.” The UNAIDS data further indicated that many people living with HIV do not know their status and that concerted efforts are still needed to improve young people’s knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention. “Adolescents aged 10 to 19 years face distinct physiological, psychological, legal and social factors that make them disproportionately vulnerable to low uptake of HIV testing,” the data indicated. AHF, however, said patriarchy weighs heavily on women and girls and, combined with poverty and limited information, narrows their choices long before they can decide the terms of their own lives. “A girl who cannot afford menstrual products, who has dropped out of school, or who depends on others for money, has fewer options, including options about s**. HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) thrive in exactly those conditions,” AHF said. AHF said the Girls Act model, championed “for girls, by girls,” seeks to prevent HIV and STI transmission, support girls living with HIV to remain on treatment, reduce unplanned pregnancies and keep girls in school. “As of 2026, the programme counted more than 4,500 girls in active engagement,” it said. According to AHF, Girls Act works across four connected areas: health, education and livelihoods, leadership, and results. On health, the organisation said girls living with HIV were supported to remain on treatment, while those who were HIV-negative learned skills to prevent infection and make informed decisions. It said the provision of free menstrual health products, extended to surrounding communities, addressed a basic need that often costs girls their dignity and school attendance. The organisation added that the programme also teaches girls how to make and care for reusable pads, ensuring that access does not depend solely on supply. On education and livelihoods, AHF said the programme recognised that not every girl was in school and did not abandon those who were out of school. It said girls who wanted to return to school were supported to do so, while those who had dropped out were trained in life skills and helped to establish businesses. The African Democratic Congress, ADC, Enugu State chapter, has condemned reported attacks on opposition parties in the state, particularly incidents involving members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, on Saturday, October 10, 2026. Speaking through the Obodoeze Media Project, the mouthpiece of the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Ocho Obodoeze Chukwuma, the ADC said the reported use of firearms in a political environment was deeply troubling and represented a serious threat to public safety, democratic participation and peaceful coexistence. The party sympathised with the NDC, its leadership and members over the disturbing developments. “We call on the relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law. “While reports have circulated alleging that a life was lost, the Enugu State Government has disputed that claim, and the police have reported that a man sustained a suspected gunshot injury. “We therefore urge the authorities to establish and publicly clarify the facts, while ensuring that the injured receive appropriate care and that justice is not compromised. “We are equally concerned about the circumstances surrounding the restriction of NDC members who reportedly gathered at Akanu Ibiam International Airport to receive their party’s governorship candidate. Airports require appropriate security arrangements, and all applicable rules must be respected. “However, those rules must be applied consistently, transparently and without political discrimination. Members of political parties and other groups are regularly seen welcoming associates and leaders at public arrival points. “Any restriction imposed on one political party must therefore be supported by clear, consistently applied regulations rather than arbitrary or partisan considerations,” the statement said. The party called on the Federal Ministry of Aviation to institute an independent and transparent inquiry, in conjunction with the appropriate airport authorities, to establish precisely what happened, the basis for the restrictions imposed on the NDC, and whether the same standards are applied to other political parties. “Public institutions must remain impartial and must never create the impression that lawful civic participation is permitted for one group but denied to another on account of political affiliation. “At this critical time, we urge all political parties, their supporters and relevant authorities to reject violence, uphold democratic principles and allow lawful political activities to take place in an atmosphere of peace, fairness and mutual respect. “Our position remains unequivocal: the rule of law must prevail, equality before the law must be upheld, and the dignity of every human person must be recognised and protected, irrespective of political affiliation. “No individual or group should be above the law, and no citizen should be made to feel that their rights are inferior because of the political party they support. “Enugu State belongs to all of us. Its peace, democratic institutions and public resources must serve everyone without discrimination,” the party further stated. 2027: Enugu ADC condemns pre-election violence, urges impartiality

The Osun State Police Command has urged its personnel to prioritise their mental health and seek professional support whenever necessary to improve their well-being and service delivery. The Head of the Police Hospital, Osun State Police Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr Iyiola Ogundimite, made the call during a mental health awareness lecture organised for officers to commemorate World Mental Health Day. The event, held in recognition of the annual observance on October 10, was part of an initiative of the Nigeria Police Force to sensitise personnel to the importance of mental well-being. Ogundimite said good mental health was essential for sound judgement, professionalism, effective decision-making and respectful engagement with members of the public. He explained that police officers were routinely exposed to stressful situations, security challenges, emergency responses and other occupational pressures that could affect their psychological and emotional well-being. According to her, “the awareness programme was designed to promote mental well-being, strengthen emotional resilience and improve the effectiveness of police personnel in carrying out their duties.” The guest lecturer, psychiatrist Dr T. Ayantola of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State, highlighted the importance of stress management, adequate rest, healthy relationships and peer support in maintaining good mental health. Ayantola also stressed the need for early identification of signs of psychological distress, encouraging officers to seek assistance from qualified mental health professionals when necessary. Participants were urged to support colleagues experiencing mental health challenges and avoid stigmatising those who needed psychological or emotional assistance. The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Zungura, said the Force recognised mental health awareness as an integral part of police welfare and an important factor in effective policing. Zungura noted that officers who were mentally and emotionally healthy were better equipped to discharge their constitutional responsibilities effectively while respecting the fundamental human rights of citizens. He encouraged personnel to adopt healthy coping strategies and maintain a proper work-life balance, assuring them that the command remained committed to promoting their physical, psychological and emotional well-being to enhance service delivery and public safety.
