Have Chelsea Already Found Enzo Fernández’s Replacement?
According to FootballTransfers on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Chelsea are yet to bring in a direct replacement for Enzo Fernández following his high-profile transfer to Manchester City. However, they could find a solution within their existing squad, with Dário Essugo potentially emerging as an alternative.
Fernández’s transfer was a major development during Chelsea’s summer business, as Manchester City reportedly paid €145 million to sign the midfielder on Deadline Day.
The London club had attempted to recruit Monaco’s Lamine Camara for approximately €55 million. However, the proposed move failed to materialise after Monaco pulled out of a potential deal for Folarin Balogun.
Chelsea have subsequently been associated with several midfield targets for 2027. Despite these links, the club may decide that signing a direct replacement for Fernández is unnecessary, particularly if manager Xabi Alonso has different ideas about how his midfield should operate.
Fernández was particularly effective in an advanced midfield position under Enzo Maresca. Alonso, however, may favour a different type of player to fulfil the role within his tactical system.
Meanwhile, Essugo is developing his game during a loan spell at Strasbourg. His departure raised concerns about Chelsea’s decision to send a midfielder away when their options in that department were already limited. Nevertheless, the arrangement could prove beneficial by giving the youngster an opportunity to expand his abilities.
The 21-year-old has primarily played as a defensive midfielder, although he has occasionally featured in central defence. Strasbourg manager Hugo Oliveira is now giving him opportunities in a more attacking No. 8 position, asking him to advance with the ball and make forward runs into the opposition’s penalty area.
Essugo initially made three appearances from the bench before being handed his first start against Nice. He marked the occasion with a goal, even though Strasbourg eventually suffered defeat.
In comments reported by GFFN, Essugo discussed the tactical adjustment and explained why he welcomed the change.
“He wants me to play as more of a No. 8, and that’s good for me because I can get in the box more. It’s a new thing for me, but I can drive the ball more and help the team in defence.”
The experience in France could help Essugo return to Stamford Bridge as a more adaptable midfielder capable of contributing in different positions. While matching Fernández’s immediate impact would be a difficult challenge, his versatility could make him an important squad member.
Developing young players is central to Chelsea’s recruitment philosophy. If Essugo continues to progress under Oliveira at Strasbourg, he could provide Alonso with another midfield option without forcing the club to spend a substantial amount on a new signing. It would also give the young midfielder a valuable opportunity to compete for a regular place in Chelsea’s first team.
